At what point to do need to consult your doc?

about TTC issues? I am 11DPO with a BFN and I'm starting to wonder... we will be going into our 4th month of seriously TTC #2 I am almost 33. Do I just mention to my regular OB that I am having issues? Or do you go straight to a specialist? Do you have to do temping cycles first? Temping isn't very practical for me since I do not get up at the same time every day, I get up when DC needs me. I have been using OPK and always get a smiley. Just curious, thanks.

I don't know an actual range...but for me, if I go more than 6 months TTC and nothing I will speak to my OB. I am going to be 35 in November so I am terrified it's going to take me a long time or just more difficult this time around.

I think the "rule" is if you are under 35, you should TTC for 12months before seeking medical help. Over 35, I believe it is 6 months. I would mention it to your reg OB. He may be able to run some basic tests to be sure everything is OK or offer you some guidance and peace of mind.

I'm using 6 months as the cut-off time. Then I will talk to my OB.

It takes the average woman 12 months to conceive.

i would use 6 months as a cut off but typically it can take up a year for a bfp

I am going onto my 5th month of TTC and just made an appt for next week with my OBGYN. I am due for a regular check up anyhow but will talk to her about everything plus the weird pains I've been having.

Re: At what point to do need to consult your doc?

I am 31 and have regular cycles and I got the feeling the DR thought I was calling him too early when I called him. Now going on my 5th month of TTC but also tried for a few before the M/C and then the M/C took away 4-5 months because I was PG for 2.5 and then had to wait 7 weeks to get AF again so I was feeling hopeless when I called. The dr told me that my age is not a factor at all so I'm sure your age isnt either! Since my DH was having a slight issue due to medications he gave me a script for a SA but he was pretty optimistic about me getting PG again because I got PG before. I guess you may hear something similar but it cant hurt to call. Maybe your doc will be more aggressive with you. Good luck!

Re: At what point to do need to consult your doc?

most ob/gyns wont do a thing if you call them before 6-12 months.

im 29 and started TTC right before I turned 28. i went to two ob/gyns numerous times and both were reluctant to tell me i had any sort of problem. they said id be pregnant in no time. that was 17 months ago. exactly 6 months after starting to TTC (with only 1 confirmed ovulatory cycle) i went to an RE and was immediately DX with PCOS. that was in november and ive since had 2 chemicals and im about to start IVF.

if you think there is an issue you should DEFINITELY temp, its the ONLY way to confirm ovulation. if you find you are ovulating and are under 30 you can prob wait a little while. if you arent ovulating thats another story and you need to see the doctor soon.

if your ob/gyn brushes you off try another doctor. if you cant get an ob/gyn to take your concerns seriously (many wont) then see an RE. i saw one as soon as i knew i wasn't ovulating. its the best decision ive made as far as TTC goes.

good luck!!

Mich, it took us 6 months to conceive Tyler (and 3 mnths for Jack)

I had spoken to my dr. days before I got my BFP with Tyler and she said that at 8 or 9 months we could start to do some more tests. Thankfully we got a BFP that month. In my head I was prepared that it was going to take awhile.

For right now, I wouldn't worry about it just yet. Give it a few more months and then talk to your doctor if you are not pregnant by then! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

ETA: Are you using Preseed?

We started using Preseed this past cycle.

I just wasn't prepared for it to take this long, I guess I am just wondering if something is wrong. I keep reading about this second infertility stuff. Maybe I just got lucky the first time around. I will give it 2 more cycles and then probably give my OB a call. Thanks for the advice Chat Icon
