Autism Q - if you know about it, pls come inside

For anyone who knows about Autism - have you ever heard of someone being considered on the spectrum who doesn't have a problem with speech and communication? ie, a child who not only has good language skills but was also a proficient and early talker as well as someone with a advanced vocabulary? I always though that no matter what area of Autism a child might fall into, the lack of language skills and or communication skills were always a constant, to different degrees depending on the individual. Anyone know?

TIA

autism is a spectrum disorder, so there can be many different variations of speech, language and communication impairments. there is also a social and behavioral component.

aspergers, yes is considered a "mild" form of autism, but individuals with aspergers still may present with language delays, especially with pragmatics and prosody.

Sounds like Aspergers. Its the high functioning autistic and they generally have good/normal language skills.

exactly... from what i have read, children with Asperger's have difficulty with social functioning although their vocabulary is on par or advanced for their age group.

Aspergers could definitely be the issue. Many people who have this funciton quite well overall, but their social skills are lacking.

Sounds like Aspergers to me too. It is part of the autism spectrum, but I believe in order to receive a diagnosis of Aspergers there actually can't be a significant delay in language skills. Although there may be good language skills and advanced vocabulary the social use of language tends to be weak-topic maintenance, conversational turn-taking, conversational appropriateness, etc.

I had a student with Asperger's last year, and this child was off the charts brillant! He was a 7th grader, but tested past 12th grade in math.

He did have some social issues - but more that he had a hard time communicating with his peers since his vocabulary was so good.

Autism is different for every single case, which is why it is a spectrum. yes it could be aspergers but I've also seen some students who were very verbal and were just high functioning students with autism.

My nephew has Asperger's. He has good vocabulary.. but when he speaks its almost like a robot. There are no pitches - no emotion when he speaks.
Robotic is the only way I can describe it.

Re: Autism Q - if you know about it, pls come inside

Individuals with Aspergers syndrome never had a speech delay, but how they use language is different and not always functional - think of a 2 yr old who can tell you every galaxy in the universe but wion't say hi, play blocks, or ask for a cokie in the kitchen... Also they won't be able to read facial expressions or body language... This is called pragmatic language and the biggest deficit when it comes to Asperger's Syndrome or High Functioning Autism. They need to learn how to communicate appropriately and behave in socially appropriate ways. they can speak, but not always communicate effectively...
