Babies in Bars?

I'm curious to hear what Moms here think of bringing babies or toddlers to a bar. There was an old artilce in the "Sunday Style" section about an uproar around a Park Slope bar that posted "No Stroller" and "No Patrons Under 21" signs. Moms in the area had been gathering there and were upset about this. Meanwhile, single people had been annoyed that they were bringing their children to the bar when they wanted to relax and have a drink.

So what do you guys think about bringing your baby to a bar?

All I can think of is the line from Sweet Home Alabama:

"Look at you...you have a baby...in a bar"Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

My work has Happy Hours at places like Dave and Busters and some people bring babies.

In Ireland pubs are family places with kids of quite a range of ages.

It depends on the type of place.

I would never bring my boys to a bar, especially to DRINKChat Icon

We have brought the boys to a bar/restuarant, but we ate on the "dining" side.

I had my daughter in a bar last weekend...granted it was for a bridal shower, but I had a beer. I think people are a little too uptight sometimes. DD was soo good! My friends were joking saying her Irish side was coming through!

Re: Babies in Bars?

If you go to a bar that has a lot of space and you don't go during peak times when it's crazy crowded and both you and the patrons start getting annoyed, I don't see anything wrong with it. We might just go to hang with a couple friends, but we're not going to get smashed. If you go to a small place with your big stroller during happy hour, it's just a pain for everyone. The bar is not in business to have people in there with strollers and kids, so I really don't think there's anything worng with them asking you to not come in.

Re: Babies in Bars?

I live just outside of Annapolis, MD where we have some GREAT outdoor bars and restaurants. I've never brought her at night- just during the afternoon, and yes, I have been known to have a glass of wine or two (especially if DH is there to drive).

That said, if I went out for a night on the town and saw someone bellyiong up with a Bjorn I'd Chat Icon

Re: Babies in Bars?

I don't see a problem bringing a baby to a bar under certain circumstances. For example we brought Luke during the day to watch a UConn game. We ordered food and took over the corner (grandpa and aunts & uncles were with us). There were only like 10 other people (all UConn fans) in the place. It was fine and a good time. I wouldn't bring him during prime time when it is really busy and everyone is there just to drink. I don't think that would be appropriate or comfortable. But a bar/grill where we are at a table at off hours I think is perfectly fine.

ITA I actually live in a neighborhood right next to Park Slope and the neighborhood has been taken over by strollers. Over that last 5 years or so there has been a huge baby boom. The problem is some people are not very courteous with their strollers and children. They often take over a huge amount of space and make it difficult for others to enjoy their space. I have a son and I am often out and about in Park Slope, but I try my best to be courteous. I do not try to go into stores that are small or restaurants or bars that are crowded. I didn't read the article. Do you remember what bar did this?

I think it was called the Union Street Bar--from the description it sounded like it was primarily a bar, not a restaurant or cafe. I was never there, though I used to live near Park Slope too, and saw the baby boom you describe. Yeah, I think some people weren't very considerate at times of their strollers or people without children, so I can see why the bar may have found it necessary to take this step.

I think it depends on the atmosphere. If it's during the day and not crowded and more of a "restaurant"-type atmosphere, it's fine. If it's binge drinking and crowded then it's not appropriate. I've brought DD to a restaurant with me and had two glasses of wine with a friend and her baby...I saw nothing wrong with it. Moms need to relax too!

Re: Babies in Bars?

I have brought DS to "bars" but not at the bar, in the food section. I guess it depends on the purpose of being there, KWIM? I have also waited at a bar with DS while waiting for a table (on more than one occasion)

Re: Babies in Bars?

A bar/grill type place, maybe, but a flat our pub/bar type place no, especially at night.

When my Oldest DD was about 5 months old, we went apple picking with the whole family in Northen CT and the only place that didnt' have a huge wait at 8pm to eat was the bar/grill at the marriot in Windsor, CT.

I felt like "that" mom with a kid in a bar at 9-10pm but we had no choice. I felt more sorry for the patrons of the wedding that were there that had to walk out of the reception to come to that bar to get alcohol then walk back. It was quite funny to see them come out in groups.

But i wouldn't have done that any circumastance if the No SMOKING law in bars wasnt' passed.

Re: Babies in Bars?

In the past I could of seen more of an issue with this..but taking into account the NO SMOKING laws that are now in effect I dont see it being a big issue...

With that said...this is something that is a case by case scenario type of right or wrong...I mean if DH and I want to take DS to a bar & grill for wings to watch a Cowboys game that's OK..but if we are taking DS out for Shots on a Friday night people might start talking.

OMG I thought of the same thing.

On LI I probably would not, it is not like I am walking past & would stop in, but in the city who knows. It is different there, and I might, especially if there is an outdoor area.

BTW, you can bring someone of any age into a bar in NYS, they just are not allowed to drink any alcoholic beverages.Chat Icon
