Babies in Bars

ok, how do you feel about people bringing babies in bars?
and i dont mean popping in for a quick drink. i mean hanging out for hours.
theres this one family who always brings their little baby (i guess like 9mo?) to the bar.
it cries REALLLLY loud, they hang out for HOURS, and then hte woman breast feeds her WHILE drinking beer!!!
i just find it trashy IMHO.
i mean, there is definatly a difference between being trash, and just having your baby tag along once in a blue moon.
i just dont think a bar is the place for a baby.
i feel like, if you NEED to drink, get a six pack and have some friends over.
Now, before ppl start twisitng everything around and saying "so women with babies shouldnt go out?" thats NOT what im implying.
i am tlaking about repetive behaviour of bringing your baby to a bar and getting trashed week after week.

how do you all feel about it?

eta: im not even tlaking abotu newborns. at least they sleep and arent a bother to other patrons and its hard for a new mom to part with her infant, but older babies and choldren i feel do not belong there.

I have never seen a kid in a bar - and until I got pregnant, I went out at least once or twice a week.

Re: Babies in Bars

Honestly (I may get flamed here), but I don't think women should bring babies to bars at ALL, whether it's for just one drink or hours of drinking. That's not the place for a baby. If you want to go drinking, get a sitter. Not only is the bar a bad environment, but getting drunk while having a child in your supervision is wrong on so many levels. JMO though.

and its not just you, ya know.. even if the mom stays sober, the baby is around drunk people and that makes me really nervous.

Re: Babies in Bars

I've never seen a baby in a bar (and I used to be quite the partier back in the day)

But - to answer your question - I do not feel that there is any place for babies or young kids in bars. Too dangerous. People are drinking, a fight could break out, you never know what could happen.

Re: Babies in Bars

1. Crying baby - no good
2. Drinking while BF - no good
3. Getting trashed with baby on nipple - no good

NOW.... I have to say when I lived in Spain, EVERYONE went to the the bar - baby or no baby. Kids ran around and played with other kids, families got together, neighbors socialized with each other - it was great. Especially outdoor bars on nice days. I wish we did this here, instead of everyone always zooming off in the mini to this practice or the other. BUT... it was a social activity, not a drink-your-*** off kind of thing. So kids grow up not trying to sneak into bars, just taking them in stride. And we would hang out with friends, and their teenage kids, and their friends, and all have a great time. No generation gaps.

Re: Babies in Bars

I don't find a bar an appropriate forum for a baby or a pregnant mother. I'm not talking the type of bars that serve as a bar/restauarant, but the tacky, stick to the floor, five cent a beer kind of establishments. Even if the future mother isn't drinking, the environment itself can lead to potential hazards, like someone starting a fight/brawl, smoking, etc.

And for a baby...that's insane. It's not Romper Room!!! I broke down with my car and had the baby with me, and the only pay phone was in a bar. I kept walking til I found something better. No way was I going in there with her!

I think it is horrible as well. Aside from the parents, I think it is responsibility on the bar as well. U cant predict what will happen at a bar even if u are only having 1 drink. Its a little odd that when I was a kid, the casinos banned us from stepping into the casino (so we snuck in) but the same rule doesnt imply for another adult related activity. I was recently in applebees, a family restaurant, and noticed kids hanging at the bar with their parents. c'mon now!

Re: Babies in Bars

I don't want to get into the whole pregnant women in bars thing again... but I think pregnant women can go wherever they want- and as a pregnant woman, I have been to a few lounges/clubs/bars with friends. The places I go to have major security, and I have never seen a fight.

But kids don't belong in bars. Its just not in the culture here. I can't imagine bringing my baby to a bar- a restaurant- yes, a cafe- yes but a bar???

BTW- I have the same problems that someone posted especially shock that someone would be drinkign WHILE they nurse.

Re: Babies in Bars

I wonder if bar-owners/bar-tenders have any legal responsibilty to report this to authorities if they witness it?

Re: Babies in Bars

Shelley... yep, she nurses after having a few beers.
at least some ppl pump beforehand if they know they are going to be drinking. that is what bothers me the most about this one woman in particular.

i dont think there are any laws prohibitnig women fomr bringing their babies or anything like that.

i know im not allowed to say anything to her.

they don't... as long as the kids aren't drinking and the parent's aren't drunk. If the parents are serving the children alcohol, then its the bar's responsibility. Also, if the parent is drunk and takes the kids, the owner can get in trouble. if there is an accident, the owner can be sued and will probably have to pay.

That is so wrong!! My sister is nursing and her doctor told her 2 alcoholic beverages a week were safe. I'm sorry, but I would be nervous to hold my baby after a few beers... lets alone nurse her.

Re: Babies in Bars

Drinking while breastfeeding is terrible- unless you pump of course- isn't it like serving your baby beer in his baby bottle?

But, depending on the bar, I think it's okay to BRING babies- if it's the kind of place where people eat , have one or two drinks and don't generally get trashed- like the kind of place Kara was talking about.

Re: Babies in Bars

She shouldnt be downing beers if she is breastfeeding, the alcohol goes to the baby.

One beer is one thing - but beers???!!??

A baby should not be in a bar, unless its like a restaurant/bar and the mother is there for a party or something.

To go to a bar on a random Fri/Sat night and bring your baby is wrong.
