Baby Bird question- Help- UPDATE

There is a little baby blue jay under the bushes on the side of my house. He cannot even get up and move around. My dogs actually pointed him out to me. He doesn't seem to be dying or anything. What do I do? How can I help the mama find it???? How long should I wait? Will the mama move it?

UPDATE at bottom

Most likely it will die. Chat Icon

Mommy birds don't try to save the fallen babies. It's the way nature goes. It sucks.

you should call caumsett state park tomorrow - they have a wildlife rehabilitation hospital - they should be able to help you out - I volunteered there 10 yrs ago...

Yes i have known two people (friend, grandma too) to take in baby birds (sparrrows) at that. Feed them a mixture (I am not sure what but just search online).

Both birds grew up and then were released in the yard and after a few tries, flew happily away. The One bird always came back to see my grandma for years and years. They named the bird and everything.

If you are willing, DO NOT just let the bird die. Get a shoebox, poke holes, etc. I would not worry about getting a disease but if you are, wear gloves. I am sure if you google, you can find out how to save the baby bird.

If you really want, I could ask my neigbor for you. She did this and was very happy the bird survived.

Well he does have feathers so I think he is a fledging not a nestling so hopefully his chances of survival are better. I tried to give him a worm but he wasn't ready so I am going to google what sort of mixture to make him. I am willing to do anything. I live in Port Jeff I need to find the closest place who will take him tomorrow. Thank you everyone.

Re: Baby Bird question- Help

my DH has nursed some baby blue jays back to health...he said for now, most important is water. He said the bird will nip at you but it shouldnt hurt. Take its beak and dip it in a bit of water and wait...the bird will recognize that water is there. You can also try feeding it raw chop meat.

Really??? Everything I have been reading says "no liquid". How old were the ones he nursed? He likes this dog food and applesauce mixture I am giving him.

Re: Baby Bird question- Help

I've heard that touching it is not a problem since birds can't smell.

I would try to care for it in some way, especially before a cat gets it.

Re: Baby Bird question- Help- UPDATE

OK, for those who are interested, the baby bird seemed to sleep through the night after being fed...a lot. This morning he was still alive so I contacted Wildlife Rescue and spoke to this man George from Sheep Pen. He told me that Selden Emergency Hospital accepts wildlife and would hold the bird for me until he could go pick him up. So that is what I did this morning and the people at Selden said he looked great and they had a bunch and they believed he was going to make it so needless to say I am sooooooo happy. Chat Icon

Re: Baby Bird question- Help- UPDATE

I'm so glad you found a practice that would take the bird.

Just to let you know, my DH's practice accept baby birds as well, and there is a particular staff member that does so well with nursing these little guys.

Thank god for good samaritans like you
