Baby bunnies (wild)....
DH and I had my ILs over on Sunday night and they brought their yorkie, Teddy. Things were going fine and then Teddy starts barking up a storm when he sees one of the wild rabbits in our backyard grazing.
Our dog, Daisy, could care less about the rabbits (there are 2-3) in our yard. They both co-exist without any issues.
My MIL took Teddy out to do his business later on in the evening and while outside, the adult rabbit was over near my garden munching on weeds/grass. Teddy barked up a storm again and chased the rabbit away.
A few minutes later, I went out to my garden to grab a few cherry tomatoes and some other vegetables for dinner when I noticed a set of eyes staring at me.
Among my chives and onions was a tiny nest with three baby bunnies inside. I called my MIL and DH out to look at them and they looked so cute, but very frightened. We cut up a few carrots and left them by the nest as we think the mother adult bunny was trying to feed her babies when Teddy scared her away.
So, what do I do? The adult rabbits have not returned to our yard and the babies have not moved from their nest. I know I should let nature take its course, but I also don't like the idea of a dead bunny being in my garden where my veggies are.

Re: Baby bunnies (wild)....
My friend who works for the Wildlife Rescue Center of the Hamptons put this on Facebook:
"Remember to check your lawn for baby rabbits' nests before mowing and raking. If you accidentally uncover a rabbits' nest, you can cover it back up again. Mom only visits the nest twice a day."
It doesn't sound like you need to do anything. Just enjoy their company and keep clear of the area.

Easier said then done. The bunnies are literally within the 1 foot wall of my garden.
Guess I just have to be careful when picking my veggies.

Mama Bunny picked a great place, eh?? I don't think you'll disturb them by coming near - I meant keep it clear of dogs really.

Re: Baby bunnies (wild)....
im assuming Daisy either hasn't found the nest or doesn't care?
if she hasn't found it, then maybe you could put up some type of fencing around the garden to keep other dogs etc out? kinda like a lil bunny sanctuary?
if Daisy knows about the nest and doesn't care... tell MIL to keep Teddy at home for the season! LOL

Daisy could care less. She just watches them scamper on the lawn when she is outside, but never has made any motions to chase them. She chases the squirrels, which I'm more than happy with!

Upon reading the web site, I think the rescue is more for domesticated rabbits that got wild. These are wild rabbits that roam my neighborhood and made a home for themselves in my garden.

In that case, i would just leave them be and ask MIL to leash Teddy or leave him at home till they are gone.... or get a fence for when Teddy comes over...

Re: Baby bunnies (wild)....
Don't touch the bunnies! The mom will only come twice a day, and it is easy to miss her. You want to leave the bunnies where they are. I know the first reaction is to scoop up the babies and take them to a rehab center, but it is really hard to rear baby bunnies. I used to work at a wildlife rehab center and the success rate with baby bunnies is not good, as they are prone to bloat and other indigestion problems. They will have a much better shot where they are!

Re: Baby bunnies (wild)....
We haven't touched one of them. They have remained in the garden box, but they have ventured out of the nest and love moving around my onions and cucumbers. I took a few pictures the other night, but I think they like hiding under the large leaves of the cucumbers from all the rain storms we've had recently. They are so cute!
Mom bunny and I presume Dad bunny have been seen in the yard recently, so I think all is okay.

Oh ok! I thought they were little blind, no fur bunnies. If they are hopping around then they are past the danger zone (so to speak), and don't really rely on mommy to feed them. They probably are loving your garden! They like dandelion too.
SO CUTE though! I wouldn't mind having baby bunnies in my yard, but I don't think my pups would be as good as yours is with letting them be!

Re: Baby bunnies (wild)....
All the bunnies have left the nest per se. They are no longer in my garden, but DH did the lawn last night and they were scampering in the corner under a pine tree, so he avoided the area.
Although he frightened one and it ran into my neighbor's fence and fell back dazed.
