Baby bunny rabbit stuck in my yard!!! (pics in album) Update at the bottom!!

Anyone know about bunnies??? I have a baseball field across from my home and at night u always see lots of rabbits running around the field and street,
Today I took my daughter in the backyard to play and when she went in her play house there was a baby rabbit which I thought was dead.
Well I just went out to check it and it moved about 2 inches to a different spot in the house. I brought it out some water and cut up some lettuce and put it in front of him he didnt even flinch. I dont know what to do with it. I would love to have the nerve to pick it up and bring it to the field to its mommy but not sure.
Any tips???? TIAChat Icon

OMG, how small is it? Do you think it's injured? That is so sad. If there are so many bunnies by you, maybe call LI Rabbit rescue for help, with this bunny and the others. Call them at least to see what they suggest you do for this poor baby.

I'm not sure where you live, but you can bring the bunny to Sweetbriar Nature Preserve in Smithtown and if he or she can be saved, they will rehabilitate it! They are also affiliated with the emergency animal hospital in Commack.

I do not think the mother will come back for it if you put it out in the field though.

Good luck!

Thank u to the both of u who responded. I just called and left message for the bunny rescue. I did not see where to email them at though. I hope they call back soon and this bunny does not die out there.

Its so small and cute maybe about 3 inches long and looks a little chubby.

I went to check it again it did not touch the water or lettuceChat Icon but it did turn its back on it..

When my dd goes in for a nap soon I will run out and take a pic to show u guys this little cutie!!

Don't move it. I would wait and see if it disappears tomorrow. The mother may have placed it there & went off to hunt.

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that baby rabbits should not be handled by humans because the mother will smell the scent & abandon them. Try not to touch it for now.

Also it may not eat the lettuce or drink the water because its still too small & needs his mother's milk.

I hope its mom comes back for him soon Chat Icon

Re: Baby bunny rabbit stuck in my yard!!! (pics in album)

My friend works for a wildlife rescue and this was her FB status the other day:

"Remember to check your lawn for baby rabbits' nests before mowing and raking. If you accidentally uncover a rabbits' nest, you can cover it back up again. Mom only visits the nest twice a day."

Rabbits are nocturnal. So maybe you should let it be and see if it's still around tomorrow.

That bunny isn't all that young so I wouldn't worry too much. It may have just been weaned. I would try putting on a thick pair of gloves (they can scratch and bite). If you can pick it up it probably does need your help. If it runs off it should be ok.

Before you do anything though give these people a call - they will take wild animals for no charge.

It really is very little was on super zoom on my camera to get the picture. Its only as long as my fingers. Do u think being that small its not that young??? I dont have the courage to touch it even w/ gloves. My husband wont be home till late tonight. He can take a look.

Any updates??

No updates, i checked on it, it has not moved at all. I have not heard back from the bunny rescue people yet. I hope like op have said, that maybe it will move on its own when it gets dark. I will def update if there is anything new. My instinct tells me something is wrong w/ it. Its just so tiny and didnt move at all when I tried moving things to see if it was dead. We will see. I just hope its ok!!

It honestly sounds like someything may be wrong with it. I have 3 bunnies and even when they were babies they never stayed in one spot like that. Could you get it to an emergency vet? When bunnies are sick they can die in a matter of hours. There is one in Westbury on Old Country Road. You can just drop it off there. Also, if you don't hear back from the rabbit rescue, try calling Dr. Jennifer Saver. She is one of the few rabbit savvy vets on the island. 516-877-7080. I pray he is ok Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Baby bunny rabbit stuck in my yard!!! (pics in album) Update at the bottom!!

Just went out to ck on the bunny and its GONE!!!! I just cant believe it! I am sooooo happy that its ok. I just dont understand how it never moved all day between my dd playing in there and me checking on it all day. I thought it was injured for sure!! I just stood out there with a flashlight inspecting every inch of grass inside her playhouse and he/she is nowhere!!
I even roamed through my yard and nothing!!
Thank you all so much for ur responses and info, as i was really worried about it all day. Now i just hope and pray that it gets reunited with its family and it really is healthy, as I am still worried that it didnt move all day! I will keep bunny in my prayers. Thanks again!

OMG i never even thought of that!! I certainly hope not!! Yes when I last checked it was about 845 pm. time b4 that i checked was about 6pm and it was still there.
I am really hoping that like op said they r nocturnal and maybe when it got dark he hopped away. I still find it very strange how it stayed there all day. I was convinced it was injured. I will do a full look over in my yard tomorrow during the day!!

Re: Baby bunny rabbit stuck in my yard!!! (pics in album) Update at the bottom!!

We had a similar situation last year - saw a lone baby bunny in our yard - stayed completely still (could not even barely see it - it was just about as tall as the grass blades) for about 20 hours. It was raining and I went out and covered it with a steptool - lol. It came out from under there, and hopped about a foot away. I kept my eye on it all day until FINALLY the mommy came back with another baby bunny - the 2 had finally been reunited with the mommy. I saw them nursing and then the 3 of them hopped away. I am so hoping the mommy bunny found yours!!!
