Baby Clothes - sizes, washing, etc.

I've been going through what I have and getting ready to wash some stuff, but I'm getting really overwhelmed and confused!

Did you buy much newborn stuff? I only have a few newborn things, and I wasn't sure if I should wash them at this point. What if the baby is bigger than 8lbs? He'll never even get to wear them!

Also been slightly paranoid lately that the sonographer might've been wrong about the gender - I'm sure she wasn't, but I've just been having this weird feeling! LOL. So I was only going to wash the gender neutral stuff. Is that normal or am I being weird?

Re: Baby Clothes - sizes, washing, etc.

The only thing i bought in new born was her coming home outfit and i am brining an extra outfit in 0-3 months in case she is born over 8 pounds. I can't see her getting alot of use out of newborn clothing so i just stuck with 0-3 months clothing.
Every time i go for a sono i have them check to make sure she is still a girl and so far the last 4 times, she still has her girly parts!!

Re: Baby Clothes - sizes, washing, etc.

i only have a couple newborn things (maybe 4 or 5) - they were either hand-me-downs OR gifts with no receipts that i couldn't exchange for another size (yay for BRU stupid return pols), so i washed them anyway.

Most of the stuff I washed was carters 0-3 mos which looks pretty big - some of the carters 0-3 mos are larger than gerber 3-6 mos.

I KNOW! Chat Icon
My SIL gave me a heads up that Gerber stuff runs small. I don't have much Gerber stuff, mostly t-shirts, but they're definitely in the 0-3 month pile. I think that's what's confusing me more!

A lot depends on the baby. May I suggest having both newborn (with receipts and tags on) and 0-3 (3 month) clothing on hand.

In my case - Both my DD's were about the same size at birth - DD#1 was 9lbs 4 ozs and 20 inches, DD#2 was 9lbs 5 ozs and 20 inches. Well I never used newborn with DD#1 I didn't get any and just put her in 0-3 which fit but were big. Well this time around - I have a ton of 0-3 but guess what - DD#2 couldn't wear 0-3 they were HUGE - as in the pant fell off OR they could be hiked up way past her shoulders so I had my mom go out and buy some newborn items - which btw a few still fit (she was weighed at a ped visit for reflux on thursday at 10lbs 10 ozs) her one month visit is this friday and I think she will probably be at least 11 lbs by then.

So I think it largely depends on the child and their proportions. So maybe have plenty of 0-3 but also have some newborn items handy with the tags - you can always have a family member wash the newborn items for you if you decide you need them.

Re: Baby Clothes - sizes, washing, etc.

I bought a couple of newborn things (maybe 6) on clearance out the outlets in PA. I will be washing the stuff just to be on the safe side. I have quite a few things of 0-3 & will re-evulate after my shower this weekend.

Right now, my plan is to wash all the items I have through 3-6 months just to be safe. If I happen to have a bigger baby, the newborn stuff will just be put away but washed.

Re: Baby Clothes - sizes, washing, etc.

I have about 6 newborn outfits washed and ready, but mostly 0-3. I have packed for the hospital a 0-3 and a newborn outfit, depending on his size.

Did you only have one sono confirming the sex? I probably would have been more hesitant about the gender-specific outfits, but we had something like 8 sonos, and each one confirmed Chat Icon (and my office said they have a 99% accuracy rate!), so i didn't even worry about the gender neutral stuff. i registered for some because of thinking of having another, but i'm not too worried about them being wrong about the sex.

My DD didnt fit into any 0-3 clothes until about 6 weeks. She was 7lbs 7oz when born, and dropped to about 6lbs 12 oz in the hospital. She was well over 9lbs before she fit into 0-3. then she didnt last long in 0-3, and was in 3-6 pretty quickly

Re: Baby Clothes - sizes, washing, etc.

The only newborn stuff I have we got as gifts. There is probably more than we need, but I didn't have much of a choice since most of it couldn't be returned.

I'm with you, I'm a little nervous about the gender having been told to me incorrectly (I only had my level 2, no sonos afterwards, although I am supposed to have one at 38 weeks). I'm only taking tags off and washing the neutral stuff and waiting till the baby is in my arms and def. a Chat Icon before I wash everything else. I feel a little silly waiting to wash it all, but I'm so paranoid!

Re: Baby Clothes - sizes, washing, etc.

Since all of the baby's clothing will be gender neutral, I just plan on washing everything. If Chat Icon doesn't get to use something, then it will be packed away or passed on to my sister for her future kids. I want to be prepared regardless.

I washed almost everything - I got A LOT of stuff at my shower but no "outfits" really - all onesies & pj kinda stuff.

I got very few newborn items and ones that were dupes of 0-3 or 3-6 things, I didn't wash yet thinking I'd be having a JGG baby. Now that the doc is "predicting" a 7-8lb baby, I know I at least have a few things I can wash if I need.

I returned what I could of multiple duplicates so when Baby Hubs comes, I can buy actual gender specific things and things other than what I already have.

Re: Baby Clothes - sizes, washing, etc.

each baby is different! mine was 6lbs. at birth and stayed in newborn size for 8-10 weeks! she still stays in a size for at least 3-4 months. it also depends on the baby's proportions. they will wear different items from different sizes...like now, DD is in a larger size for leggings and onesies, but not regular pants, most shirts, dresses, etc. once the baby is born you will get tons of gifts in all sizes too!
