Baby Einstein and Autism
We went to a communion on saturday and one mother there and I got to talking about autism. She mentioned that there is a theory now that baby einstein is a cause of autism. Has anyone heard of this before? I think this is crazy!!! DS watches baby einstein all the time. What else will they come up with.

Re: Baby Einstein and Autism
That could be the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. I understand the theory that children who watch too much TV and play too many video games aren't as social, etc. but that is absurd

Re: Baby Einstein and Autism
This is wacky. I wouldn't pay attention to it. There are theories that watching tv can cause attention deficit problems, but I've never heard of autiusm.

Re: Baby Einstein and Autism
That is very absurd!!! I mean really! My DD is 18 months and is OBSESSED with Baby Einstein - she watches the same dvd a few times a day and asks for it at my moms, our friend's house...it's a comfort thing for her but she's loved it from about 2 months old. She asks me to turn it on and sometimes watches...sometimes wanders off and plays. She has a pretty high vocabulary for 18 months and interacts with everyone.
It's sad - I think a lot of moms are reaching out for answers that are just not there yet...but they are looking in the wrong places.

Exactly. I think she may be getting her news reports crossed.

Honestly, I would limit your baby's time in front of Baby Einstein just from other reports I've seen, but I've never heard of an autism connection.

What kind of reports? DD loves Baby Einstein...it calms her down when she is freaking out.

Re: Baby Einstein and Autism
I am not a fan at all. I don't believe that autism link...I just hate the way it mesmerizes the little boy I watch.
His mom sent it over for him to watch, after 15 minutes, I turned it off...he seemed lifeless.

Re: Baby Einstein and Autism
Honestly, that has to be one of the most ridiculous correlations with autism I have ever heard of and I have heard them all.
Bottom line is that people want a reason for everything. They want someone or something to blame. When they can't find it, they reach for straws.
Is it healthy to plop your kids in front of a TV all day long in the place of human interaction? Probably not. But a TV program in and of itself will not cause autism. I have however heard of certain programming/editing of shows/flashing lights on computers/etc. inducing seizures and have seen it myself. But definitely NOT autism.

Re: Baby Einstein and Autism
All these articles refer to planting your children in front of TV as if for hours...I doubt anybody in their right mind plants their kids in front of the TV for hours. I believe that children should be exposed to to videos, TV and all that other good stuff in moderation. I remember growing up, my parents would let me watch appx. 30 minutes to 1 hour of TV a day and the rest I was too busy either being in pre-school, school or playing outside. If your children have a structured day, I doubt they'll even want or have that much time to watch TV.

The America Academy of Pediatrics recommend no TV or electronic media for children under two but it has nothing to do with Autism.

Re: Baby Einstein and Autism
I heard this theory before while out to lunch with my friends (who are all teachers). Someone mentioned that is a theory because of the way it puts babies in trances. I've never seen Baby Einstein. I just believe that t.v. isn't for babies. JMO

Re: Baby Einstein and Autism
I personally think this is sad. Obviously this is just someone trying to find some excuse as to why their child has what they do.
I have seen this many times. I think it is just a parent trying to somehow come to grips with the WHY DID THIS HAPPEN?
And since we don't know the WHY's, it leaves people to come to such odd, silly conclusions.
Baby Einstein LOL...I mean come on now. A little common sense please. Watching a tape of Dora is ok, just not Baby Bach

Re: Baby Einstein and Autism
My niece was a baby Einstein addict! Seriously she could have used a program to help her break the cycle of watching!
But in all seriousness, we all believe, including her parents, that so much of what she learned was from there. She was 12 months old and could distinguish colors and animals. She seemed so smart and we would say things like wow where did she learn that, and her mom would say the only place I can figure is the baby Einstein because I haven't worked with her on that topic.
So personally I believe many people are looking for the "answer", why my child acts this way or that way and they find something, or someone to blame. Just MHO.
I limit the amount of TV my baby watches, but I jsut thing this "theory" is crazy.

Re: Baby Einstein and Autism
That is ridiculous and while I agree tv watching may not be best for babies, my DS does watch these videos and really I think he has learned from them. He started to babble while watching them and giggle. He doesn't love them so much anymore but btween month 2 and 3 he really loved them. Now he watches them maybe once a day if that but this jsut seems completely ridiculous.

Re: Baby Einstein and Autism
I am sorry I have to laugh. This is so ignorant!
I could understand the link with epilepsy but not autism.
DS does not like it. This is too "hectic" for him and it personally make me and DS hyper.
But autism?

Re: Baby Einstein and Autism
Kiera loved all of her baby einstein dvds and I fully believe it is one of the reasons she started talking early and identifying shapes, colors and animals at such a young age. The pediatrician has always been amazed at how advanced Kiera is. And she is still amazing us. To think that a show could cause autism is just crazy.
