Baby powder

I have seen in a few posts some people mentioned it is dangerous or not good. I thought baby powder was for babies. I even use it sometimes. Is it really bad for us or the baby?

Re: Baby powder

I don't know why it is, but I have heard before that CornStarch powder is safer...something about the talcum & your lungs....

Re: Baby powder

You really shouldn't use any powder on babies, as they can inhale it.

I went to a newborn class this weekend, and the nurse said that on the one hand, it's really not necessary, but cornstarch powder is ok.

Exactly! You don't really need to go adding stuff to their diapers unless there is a problem [diaper rash...in which case, you wouldn't use powder anyway]. The more stuff you pile on, the more issues that can arise. Also, for girls, you can clog things up with powder and apparently it's not good for her "hoo-hoo" either. I'm sure the debate is still in session, but really you don't need it and why risk it?

That is true.

My MIL makes a homemade concoction that my SILs and all of their friends swear by to cure diaper rash.
In order to get around the talc issue she mixed the powder with vaseline and makes a paste. The paste then can be spread on the baby. No dust from the talc but many of the benefits.

I told her she needs to market the stuff.

Re: Baby powder

I actually heard something very upsetting about baby powder and women/baby girls. I saw a segment on a morning show last week and a dr. said that part of the reason that baby powder, corn starch and talcum powder, is not good for women is because it can travel up into the cervix and cause harmful cells to grow. That, alone, was enough to make me throw all the powder in my house away.

She did state, though, the if you really need to use it on baby's bottom for drying effects, it works just as well if you mix it with desitin or balmex, away from baby, and use it as a paste. HTH

This is what I was told as well. There really isn't a need for baby powder at all. If you want to dry the bottom...give the baby a little time out of the diaper on a waterproof pad. They love it!
