Baby Proofing

I am going to start baby proofing. Since last night Steven crawled from one side of my bed to the other on his hands and knees, I figured now's the timeChat Icon

What should I do? Where do I start? I am clueless.

Re: Baby Proofing

I didn't do much, I believe more in teaching baby something is off limits than baby proofing the whole house.

I have outlet plugs and also the kind of outlets covers that the holes open when you plug something in then spring off to the side closing the outlet when not in use for outlets we use alot.

I put cabinet locks on the cabinets with chemicals in them-under the sink in my half bath on first floor and under the sink in the kitchen.

I am in the process of getting a gate for my stairs.

that's it for us!

Thanks! I agree with this.

Everyone is telling me to gate off my kitchen. Do I need to do that? I would prefer not to and just lock the cabinets.

Re: Baby Proofing

I will not gate off any room other than the dining room because there's a lot of glass and china in there. The kitchen I will just put safety locks on the cabinets. I will obviously put a gate at the stairs and will also put the thingies in the outlets. That's probably all we will do unless we notice something else as we go along.

I didn't gate off the kitchen, personally i dont' think it's necessary. I am constantly following DD everwhere, it's good to let them explore, and i am right behind her so she doesn't get into anything she shouldn't. It's annoying and time consuming, especially repetitive sometimes but Nothing should subsitute you supervising what your crawling baby is doing.

I totally think some of these safety things give parents false safety feelings. Even a locked cabinet, gated off doorway/stairs can still pose a hazard.

Nothing can subsitute supervision!

Ditto

- And the gate at the top of the stairs.

That's it.

Re: Baby Proofing

We didn't do a lot of "baby proofing"... a house can never be baby "proof". I agree with the others here. It's much better to teach DC boundaries. Not every house you visit will be baby-proofed. We just kept the extremely dangerous things off-limits. Cabinets with chemicals are locked, outlets are covered, and stairs are blocked. Any blinds we have are either tied very high, are untied, or don't have a drawstring. There's the potential for DC to hang themselves, and it doesn't take long to cause damage, so it's just easier to avoid it altogether. That's pretty much it. Kitchen is open (and the pots and pans are usually all over the floor!, but they enjoy it.)

he still drags his face a little though, but it's only a matter of days that he really figures it out.

It makes me sad though. He's not my little baby anymore.Chat Icon
