baby root canal.....????
has anyones child ever had a baby root canal before?? my DD (3yrs) has a cavity and the dentist wants to do a baby root canaland put a crown on the tooth instead of pulling it and putting in a space maintainer
but everyone I spoke to thinks thats crazy to do to a 3yr old etc
I dont know this dentist she seems nice and she did explain it to me that it is always better to save the tooth etc......I dnt have dental insurance either so it will be almost $400
does anyone have experience with tooth extraction, baby root canal, space maintainer etc?? thanks
I am so nervous I am gonna make the wrong choice

Re: baby root canal.....????
My friend's son had it down when he was 4 years old. From what I heard, he needed 6 root canals. I think the cavities were in between the teeth and it affected 2 teeth at once. Those molars dont fall out until the kids are older so I think they like to save all the teeth as best as they can. I'm sorry though! Poor baby!

My niece had when when she was 2 and a half
Same sutiation. She had a cavity so they did the baby root canal and put a crown on the tooth. She did fine with it. My sister was more upset than my niece

Re: baby root canal.....????
I am a dentist and this sounds like it may be needed (of ocurse, I haven't seen your child or her xrays). A baby root canal is when the decay is deep enough to get into the nerve of the tooth. The crown will help keep the tooth in place. Otherwise, you would need to extract the tooth and get a space maintainer - which could be just as costly but be less functional (can't chew with it) in the long run. If you ignore it, the decay can cause pain to your child and even affect the permanent tooth. I will say, though, that 3 yo is pretty young for this kind of problem. Did your baby sleep with the bottle?

myy dd has been off the bottle since 12 months olds....no soda no candy or gum
the dentist said it could be from gummy vitamins and fruit snacks thank you so much for responding....I am definitely getting her tooth fixed just wasnt sure what was better to have the tooth pulled or root canal

Re: baby root canal.....????
My son 4 years old and he had his tooth extracted. THe tooth was located on the bottom right. They had to put him to sleep but the procedure went really well. About two years after the extraction a space maintainer was placed. He is now 12 years old and the space maintainer was removed about a month ago.
And the funny thing is that the maintainer served as braces and all of his teeth came in perfectly.
I definitely would not recommend a root canal for such a young child.

Re: baby root canal.....????
DS needed 4 root canals and 4 extractions when he was 4 years old. He has four metal caps over the teeth that had the root canal. It was definitely more traumatic for me than it was for him. In the long run, I think this was the best decision for him as he won't be losing those molars for many years (he's 8 now).
