Re: Baby Shower for 2nd baby - is this common?
I have never been invited to a baby shower for someone who is having a 2nd child .. I dont think its very common but im sure people do it.. I dont think i would JMO even if it was a different sex from the first. i would register and if people wanted to buy things they could..

I think it depends upon the age difference of the two children. If it is 5+ years I have heard of it being done. I have not personally attended a second baby shower though.

Re: Baby Shower for 2nd baby - is this common?
Some people will do a sprinkle these days for 2nd or 3rd babies. I let my family know I did not want one. It took months for them to get me to even do a small registry of things.
Sometimes the babies are far apart so new items are needed when a new baby arrives.
I myself have never been to one

Re: Baby Shower for 2nd baby - is this common?
I'm not having one. My babies are going to be 18 months apart and they are different genders. I just had a shower last year, so I didn't see the point. My girl friends keep asking me why I don't want to have one. I think they're looking for a reason to get together again!
We really don't need anything for the new baby other than clothes, diapers, and a double stroller. DH and I opened a registry anyway in case someone is interested, but we're set on buying everything off of it ourselves. Plus we want the completion coupon.
I really do want to celebrate the new baby, but I figure we can wait until she arrives!

Re: Baby Shower for 2nd baby - is this common?
My Mom just thru me a shower for my second child. They will be 11 years apart. I have heard the rule, that if they are more than 5 years apart another shower is acceptable. My SIL is h aving her second (they will only be 4 yrs apart), she is having a "Sprinkle". Not quite as elaborate as a Shower.

Re: Baby Shower for 2nd baby - is this common?
my friends are throwing me a shower for my 2nd... my 2 will be 23 months & 1 week apart...
1st born is a boy and this one is a girl.
my 1st shower wasnt elaborate.. it was in my backyard
this one will be the same just half the amount of people and only friends... i have i think 4 family members attending...
maybe its just me.., but every baby should be showered to some extent... same sex or not
i should also add all the big items were purchased my either us or family members...
furniture, stroller, carseat

Not too common unless they are far apart in age? Maybe a differerent partner.... some people also do "sprinkles".... good luck either way!

Re: Baby Shower for 2nd baby - is this common?
This is a very popular topic on this site. I personally, believe that every new child deserves to be celebrated. OK, so you may not need as many large items, but the shower should be focused on the new mom and the upcoming baby, not just an excuse to get free gifts, IMO. We had a shower for both DC. Granted, they were different genders, and 3 years apart, but we would have had one even if they were 9 months apart and the same gender. You still need a 2nd convertible seat, a 2nd set of furniture, new pacis, possibly new clothes, new accessories for the room if they aren't sharing (lamp, area rug, pictures, etc.

I have never been to a 2nd shower - where I grew up people don't have them. In fact I didn't know anyone who had one until I came on here.

I think a small sprinkle for a 2nd baby is fine and totally appropriate

Re: Baby Shower for 2nd baby - is this common?
I've been to a few 2nd Baby showers. I have never seen an issue with them and actually threw one for a friend recently.
I'm the minority but I think every child should be celebrated.
I've also never heard of a "sprinkle".

Re: Baby Shower for 2nd baby - is this common?
I had never really heard of one til this site. When my family heard I was pregnant with twins right away they talked about throwing me another shower. For me, and it is totally a personal decision, I am not comfortable with another shower. I told my immediate family that and they still want to do something. I can understand that, but I asked them to keep it small and simple. Immediate family and at the house, not another big shower.

Re: Baby Shower for 2nd baby - is this common?
i think every baby should be celebrated as well. Most of the big stuff people have from the first baby. I have heard of it being called a SPRINKLE and my sister had 3 showers, my SIL had 3 and other SIL 2. I have been to them all and usually after the first one they gifts tend to be outfits, diapers, sheets.....all the lil things you need to replace or refresh.
Even if you arent having a shower, i would still register and put that the baby is due a month or two early so you can get the coupon earlier and buy whatever you need in one shot with the 10% off.

Re: Baby Shower for 2nd baby - is this common?
In my opinion, a very small gathering is ok for a second baby...but I feel strongly against a second shower, just how I feel. We don't do them in my family, it would be constant parties and asking a lot of people IMO. I feel you get a one shot deal, and for consecutive babies if someone wants to do something very small then its ok.
I think showers and parties to celebrate everything are getting out of hand these days but that is just me. I don't believe a second or third baby isn't being celebrated without a shower..I just think thats silly. Every baby is cherished and celebrated with or without a party. I have never not bought a gift or visited a new baby after their arrival.

Re: Baby Shower for 2nd baby - is this common?
I think it should be MORE common.
I don't get why people get so bent out of shape about this.
I HATE any "society" rules that come in front of FUN and CELEBRATION.
bring it on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ftr, I have thrown a second shower for a family member....and would do it again in a heartbeat if anyone else wanted to procreate.
and I am not a big "present getting" person. My mom is hounding me to register for this one (my first) and I don't want to.
if people didn't see showers as "asking for presents" we wouldn't have such a debate, me thinks.

I probably won't have one, but I don't see anything wrong with having a sprinkle if you've already had a shower. I love celebrating babies.

It really depends on the age difference of the kids. I know someone having twin girls and already has a two year old boy. Her friends are going to throw her a brunch which I think is fine.

Re: Baby Shower for 2nd baby - is this common?
Thanks for all the replies! My husband wants to do it but to be honest i felt a bit tacky as they are both only 2 years apart and the same sex. I registered but simple things like diapers, wipes, bottles. He thinks it is unfair that the first one had one and the second will not and is willing to pay for a brunch and not ask for gifts. ( he is from overseas and never heard of baby showers and seemed so fascinated by the 1st) my daughters 2nd birthday will also fall around the due date so maybe I will do some type of "welcome to the World " brunch - well see how i feel after the c-section! thanks again for all the feedback :)
