Baby sleeping issues heard this today
on my hospital tour.
I live in the Bronx and will be delivering in the Bronx.
During the tour, the nurse made a point of mentioning that there have been some sleep issues that have been occuring specifically in the Bronx.
She advised us for the first six months of the baby's lfe to ONLY have in the crib the fitted sheet and nothing else. No bumpers, comforters, toys etc. She goes just put the baby in a sleep sack on his/her back and that is it. She said this is to prevent SUID- Sudden Unexpected Infant Death.
This is the first I am actually hearing of this. Anyone else been told anything similar to this in the area you live in?

Re: Baby sleeping issues heard this today
i haven't heard this for LI, where I am. But up in uppoer Manhattan and the Bronx, it doesn't surprise me unfortunately. There is more smog and other pollutants in the air and those types of things can cause asthma in children so it doesn't surprise me that doctors are now more concerned for SIDS in babies up by you.
overall though, most doctors say babies should never sleep with a blanket or any type of stuffed animal...anything that could potentially block their nose and mouth and cause suffocation.

This is not specific to the Bronx. It is a known fact that babies should not sleep with anything other than a sleep sack, on a fitted sheet, in a safe place such as a bassinett, etc. No stuffed toys, blankets, comforters or anything that could smother them, and they should be sleeping on their back . All of this is to prevents SIDS.

I have heard all this as well. However she was saying not to even use a swaddle me, or even breathable bumpers, which I thought was ok. SIDS, I am well aware of, but SUID is something I am new to.

Well I could be wrong - but I think there might be a larger population in some of the city boroughs where people might not be as educated about SIDS - so that might be why the rate of death is higher.
I know that I was told over and over - no bumpers, comforters etc. Just a sleep sack or swaddle (I think some people don't swaddle correctly and if the blanket goes over the babies face that could be an issue which is why they recommend the sleep sack instead) and nothing else. Honestly you really don't need anything including breathable bumpers when the baby is really young. The don't move a lot in the beginning. You can always add the breathable ones when the baby is more mobile.
DD is 18 months and now only has a handmade blanket (the ones with the holes in them) that she sometimes takes to bed - otherwise she is just in a sleep sack - we don't use bumpers (DD has always been VERY active in the crib but it was never an issue for us) or anything else.

Re: Baby sleeping issues heard this today
I know I was told to place the baby in a sleep sack and a wedge with only a fitted sheet in the crib due to sids...
Well I did not listen and I place my son in his crib with bumpers small stuff animals, in the wedge and I had him wrapped in blankets.. I never used the sleep sack.. Since the day I brought him home he has been sleeping with a blanket on...
