What kind of soaps, shampoos and other bath products will you be using for your baby? Will you be using organic formulas? I've been think about using Nature's Baby Organic products, but I'm not sure.

It's called California Baby. People rave about it, I haven't tried it though.

DD is 15 months and we've only ever used Burt's Bees on her...it smells delicious!! Chat Icon

It all depends on how you look at it. I will be using organics because the products are available and why overload their bodies with toxic chemicals. They can do that themselves when they start drinking and smokingChat Icon Chat Icon I have Burts bees I got from my Mom and sister so I will use that and also try some other stuff, see what I like best

Check out this link for product safety

For instance-since it was mentioned on this thread J&J-I just picked one-their calming baby wash-this is what it says:

Ingredients in this product are linked to:
Cancer
Developmental/reproductive toxicity
Violations, restrictions & warnings
Allergies/immunotoxicity
Other concerns for ingredients used in this product:
Neurotoxicity, Endocrine disruption, Organ system toxicity (non-reproductive), Miscellaneous, Multiple, additive exposure sources, Irritation (skin, eyes, or lungs), Enhanced skin absorption, Contamination concerns, Occupational hazards, Biochemical or cellular level changes

They rate this product a 6 out of 10 with 10 being the most hazardous. HTH

Meli, I know you are very knowledgeable about everythingChat Icon but come on now, but almost all ingredients can be linked to something or another, no? This is just ridiculous in my opinion. J&J are one of the top companies in the world and if their products were known to cause serious concerns, they would have went out of business long ago!Chat Icon Maybe I am more relaxed about things, but soon you will find that organic products are bad for you in some way as well..

couldn't agree more. Give me a break. Everything, and I mean everything can be linked to something horrible in the world, even organic stuff.

I will probably use organic stuff too-- although, with how the FDA is changing regulations-- who knows what is truly organic these days. Not sure of the brands though.

I understand what you're saying and I just picked that cause it was mentioned. I probably should have picked another product-didn't mean to make anyone feel bad.

But no I don't think they would be out of business unfortunately. There are lobbyists in Washington that get paid LOTS of money to make sure their products aren't too critically analyzed. Also because there are so many toxins in the world if someone does get sick, could they blame it on J&J? Probably not. I think everyone has to do what they feel is right. For ME the prioducts are out there-they are a tiny bit more expensive but it's worth it to me to go the extra mile. I also have BPA free bottles.

However, I had fertility issues and did a lot of research into this stuff. I have read tons of "green" books about pregnancy and child rearing. I do NOT judge anyone else but for me this is the right choice for meChat Icon Now shut your piehole and go birth a babyChat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: baby soaps, shampoos, etc

From what I have read and the research I have done on Johnson and Johnson baby products contain an ingredinet that releases formeldahyde which is aknown cancer causing agent.

Here is the ingredient list for the "no more tears shampoo" that we are all use to seeing

Water, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, PEG-80 Sorbitan Laurate, Sodium Trideceth Sulfate, PEG-150 Distearate, Fragrance, Polyquaternium-10, Tetrasodium EDTA, Quaternium-15, Citric Acid, Yellow 10 and Orange 4.

Quaternium-15 is a preservative found in many cosmetics and industrial substances that releases formaldehyde.

Formaldehyde is one of the largest indoor pollutants in our homes. It is a recognized carcinogen, an immunotoxin, a reproductive toxicant, and a neurotoxin that can cause CNS & neurological disorders.

It is a common ingredient found in many products in your home such as air fresheners, rug cleaners, bubble bath, perfume, liquid scouring cleansers, toilet bowl cleaners, floor finishes, pressed board furniture, toothpaste, hair spray, soap, floor wax and furniture polish to name a few, but worst of all baby shampoo!

Symptoms caused by formaldehyde include allergies, cancer, asthma and cold like symptoms from immediate exposure.

The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) classifies cosmetics and personal care products, but does not regulate them. In 1938, the FDA granted self-regulation to the Cosmetics, Toiletries and Fragrance Association (CTFA), the self-appointed industry organization.
With The exception of color additives and a few prohibited ingredients, a cosmetic manufacturer may use almost ANY raw material as a cosmetic ingredient and market the product WITHOUT an approval from FDA” (”Prohibited Ingredients”, FDA Office of Cosmetics Fact Sheet, Dec. 19, 1994)

What this means is that the industry does not have to account to anyone, not even the FDA. The direct result of industry self-regulation is that many products on the market today that we use constantly–and worse, products that we UNKNOWINGLY use on our children and even babies in the womb– are Toxic

Sure J&J have been around for years and people have been using them for years, but at the same time we were all using plastic bottles containing BPA's and look what is happening now. LEad was used in paint for years and would chip off and kids would get scik. Children these days are developing more allergies, more casesof asthma and other health problems that were not seen years ago. I personally believe that enviromental toxins that we use and breate everyday do CONTRIBUTE but may not necessarily cause all of the above.

Its a personal decision........to me there isn't a harm in using an all natural product on my baby it comes down to just buying a different product.

I can't control the fumes that my baby will smell when we are taking a walk but I can use a natural product on their little body when I am bathing them.

Its just another decision parents need to research and make these days........

Re: baby soaps, shampoos, etc

organic mom here Chat Icon

Little loaf is bathed in burts bees wash, and is moisturized with apricot oil.... his formula is earth's best with dha in glass bottles (for those times where I REALLY can't BF anymore Chat Icon he's an eating MACHINE). He also has 7th generation diapers and wipes.

After working in a lab and then recognizing many 'ingredients' as chemicals that we've been trained to handle carefully to avoid skin contact at all times (becuase of cancer and irritant risks), I decided to go organic. sure the J&J products won't seriously harm your baby... but if your baby has sensitive skin, it may irritate it and enhance cradle cap (aka exema) and rashes. Diapers are treated with chlorine to make them white...not necessary IMO... and the pampers swaddlers creep me out becuase they have a pH indicator strip on them (that yellow turns green pee line)... seriously, it may be a bit convenient, but the amount of chemicals required for that... Chat Icon Many standard wipes have preservatives and other chemicals in them... so many that SBU hospital refuses to distribute them becuase they irritate a newborns skin. they moisten a papertowel with water and use it.

and don't get me started with standard mattresses made with degassing foams (stinky and not good!) and the mattresses and some clothing being treated with boric acid Chat Icon seriously toxic!
so it's more $$, but we decided it would be best to avoid chemicals when possible.... my attitude is that going the natural way can't HURT....

Ditto!!!! I am leaning towards organic foods and even pureeing my own food for her when the time comes just bc of all the cr*p that is sprayed on veggies and put into ready made foods to preserve it...but my parents used J&J on me, and thankfully I think I'm OK..if i was good 25+ years ago I'm OK to use it...TOTALLY personal decision...on the other hand I do think that 25+ years ago we weren't using as much cr*p in our food productds!!!

I will probably use some orgnanics, but more for environmental reasons. I will definitely be using a green detergent to wash baby clothes. We already use it for our clothes.
