Babyproofing furniture question

DH is going to be baby proofing the furniture this weekend by securing it to the wall. I am sure this is a silly question but is there a way to safely secure the furniture without drilling holes into it? The nursery furniture is new and I would hate for it to have holes in it. Of course, safety comes first but I figured it cannot hurt to ask Chat Icon

Re: Babyproofing furniture question

Ours came with a strap attached to the back of the dresser. DH just had to attach the strap to a stud in the wall. Check the back, it should have a child strap attached already.

Re: Babyproofing furniture question

If it comes with a strap already, the strap is screwed into the furniture. No matter how you look at it, you really need to have a screw put into the back of the item. It's on the back, so you'll never see it. Furniture is full of nails, screws, staples, etc. One more won't make much of a difference, but at least this hole is for safety... Chat Icon

No if it is on the back that is fine...I think DH was thinking of using these l shaped brackets that would have to be screwed into the actual side of the furniture

Re: Babyproofing furniture question

The only other way would be to attach one end of the strap to the wall and then wrap around the furniture and then attach other end to the wall.. but i dont think that would make it safe. We just screwed the straps into the furniture.. you really cant even see it. I figure its going to stay that way for many years and a hole you can always fill with wood filler later on..

Oh, I see your concern, then. I've never seen someone use L brackets to attach it to the wall. It's almost always straps. With the straps, you have much more leeway with where the furniture is, and where the strap goes in relation to the wall studs. It has to be anchored to a wall stud, which are 16" apart. With a strap, you are always within reach of a stud, no matter where the furniture actually sits. With an L bracket, you need to have the piece ending right where a stud is, even if it's inconvenient.
