Babysitter/Nanny questions-where to begin?

Does anyone have a nanny/babysitter come to their house instead of bringing your kids to daycare? If so, where did you find them and how did you get started?
My DH works mostly nights, and I'm thinking it may be better if we had someone to come here when I go back to work. But I have no idea where to find someone, and I'm not even sure I'm comfortable with the idea of someone in my house.
Any advice?

I was a babysitter/nanny (because I went waaaay beyond normal babysitter duties) for 2 years before I had DS and I went to their house. I found the family I work for online, some long island nanny site that I'm not sure even exists anymore. I just googled li nanny and found a site with people looking for a nanny/nannys looking for work. Also try care.com and sittercity.com

I found my original nanny on CL. She was great with the kids but basically quit with no notice because of some personal issues. My sister has found all her in-home daycares through craigslist(she brings her kids to their house)

Did you interview a lot of people? I did a free search today and they all seemed so young and I got freaked out, LOL.

The sitter I bring DS to is the Mom of a friend. Word of mouth is a good tool!

I mentioned I wanted someone to care for DS @ their home or ours. She went home & mentioned it to her Mom. Her Mom was retiring around when DS was born. It was perfect for all of us!

I sometimes feel like asking around to people you know will lead you someone you can trust more!
