Back from 9 month check up-MMR questions

DD is now 18 lbs. 10oz. and 27 1/2 inches long. Everything seems great.

We talked about her 1 year visit in Sept and the Doctor said I can break up the MMR or delay it past 15 months. What is everyone else doing and why?

TIA

Re: Back from 9 month check up-MMR questions

My Ped does the MMR at 15 mos and the Prevnar and Chickenpox at a year. I am following his schedule.

ETA: I changed the name of the shot when I remembered it!

Re: Back from 9 month check up-MMR questions

I've been wondering what to do about the MMR as well. I'm definitely going to put it off as long as I can. My ped said he would wait until 18mos but I'm hoping to put it even longer than that.

Does anyone know when they "need" to get at least one of the MMR shots before in order to enter school? Do you need it for nursery school? Do they need it prior to starting? TIA Chat Icon

I went today for ds's 15 mth appt and my ped told me he was absolutely AGAINST delaying it or splitting it and I said too bad. He said he respected my decision but didn't agree.

I'll most likely delay it until ds is 2 or around that age. I just don't feel comfortable doing it any earlier than that.

Re: Back from 9 month check up-MMR questions

I didn't delay, she got it on schedule around 12 months. I would rather her get the shot than get the measles, mumps or rubella. There was a great reader friendly article in Parenting magazine this month about shots and diseases coming back due to lack of or delaying vaccinations.

I broke it up and delayed it. That's great that your doctor is giving you the option. I've just read too many stories about parents linking their child's autism to the shot -- I wanted to err on the side of caution.

DS got his rubella shot at 18 months, his mumps shot at 19 months and I'll probably give him his measels around 2 years.

Both DDs received it on schedule. I trust my doctors and believe they've done much more research and have much more experience with vaccines than I will EVER have.

DS is 9 months old and we're not delaying any of the shots. We're going by our ped's schedule.

I am both delaying and splitting. I actually may not even give the MMR. DH & I are not thrilled with them to be honest and only did it because we thought we had to for day care.

I've been reading the Dr. Sears book, but haven't gotten to the MMR yet, I need to read it more carefully, and I have a little time.....

Re: Back from 9 month check up-MMR questions

We didn't delay and we didn't split. At his 12 month appt Lucas got the MMR and the chicken pox vaccines.

Now....I won't lie...I was nervous. As much as I say that I don't believe there is a link I still held my breathe. Fortunately Lucas didn't have a reaction but the day of I stood in front of Diana1215 getting all choked up with the what if.

But my husband said it best in my opinion...12 months / 15 months...if it's going to happen it's going to happen. I do believe that so we followed our doctor and I stood by my opinion.

Re: Back from 9 month check up-MMR questions

we are def. delaying, until he is at least 2. I know that my dr gives it at 12 months (my nephew just got it) but it is our decision as parents, so thats what we are sticking with.

My son also cant get the chicken pox because I am pregnant and am NOT immune to the pox, so he cant get the shot yet.

Do you have a religious exemption for day care and school since it's required for both?

It really makes me sad that all the other children are at risk from people that don't immunize at all against diseases that are making a comeback.

You can also claim a scientific exemption. There are much higher risks with immunizations than the diseases themselves for some children. I have done a ton of research, and consulted with several professionals in the medical field. Am I doing it b/c of a link to autism...no. I am against it b/c like me, my son's body does not handle the shots well. He gets lumps, high fevers, and rashes. His body reacts violently against even what is considered a "safe" vaccination. It is entirely possible that he will grow out of it and have no further reactions to the shots. I do what is safe for my son. Sorry if it makes you sad. And thanks so much for trying to guilt me without knowing the facts.

I've never heard of the scientific experiement claim, interesting!
I'm not trying to make you feel guilty and you shouldn't feel guilty if you are 100% comfortable with your decision. I do think it's been proven that more people die from the diseases themselves than the vaccines though.

I think it's really unfair that a daycare would a alllow a child that is not immunized attend their center. Babies as young as 6 weeks attend daycare and babies that age can't be vaccinated against those things yet. If little Johnny gets the measles or the mumps or say whooping cough because he wasn't vaccinated, he's putting everyone else at risk. I think it's fine if someone wants to make that decision, but I don't think it's fine to put those children in an environment like that and risk everyone else's health.

I'm very pro-vaccine so like usual, we'll have to agree to disagree on the vaccine stance!! Chat Icon

Re: Back from 9 month check up-MMR questions

I do think it's been proven that more people die from the diseases themselves than the vaccines though.

There are higher risks associated with reactions to vaccines, some of which can be deadly, than the risk of being exposed to the disease itself. The risk of a febrile seizure from a vaccine is 1 in 3000. The risk of being exposed to Measles is 1 in a few hundred thousand. You are at a higher risk of getting Measles in a mall or a tourist area than in daycare.

Certain vaccinations also have been thought to lend to "superviruses." These viruses have mutated and adapted to treatment and vaccination and are now resistant to treatment or have become un-treatable.

Right..little Johnnie goes to the mall and gets the measles or whopping cough from someone not vaccinated from another country or has visited another country (like we've read about a lot lately) and BRINGS it to daycare (or school or Gymboree, etc.) I digress though Chat Icon

Re: Back from 9 month check up-MMR questions

our new peds give this at 12 mths, but I wanted to wait until 15 mths.

Not for any autism concern, more to make sure my dd does not have an egg allergy. She will get this at 15 mths.
