Backyard party for 3rd b-day--- entertainment question
Last year we had DD's 2nd b-day party in our backyard…it wasn’t hot enough for the pool that day, but we had the water table set up, as well as the play house and little swingset thing we have. I also had a basket of coloring books, crayons, stickers, etc set up. There were a few kids, mostly in the 2 and under age range. The kids had a blast, entertained themselves & each other. I don’t think any of them touched any of the crafts stuff at all.
Same party planned for this year, now obviously she’ll be 3…same kids invited, so they’re a year older too. We have the same things to play with in the yard as last year as well as the new bounce house we have and will set up the little pool if it's hot.
Do I NEED to have crafts, etc. for them to do too? We’re not having any other entertainment (characters, face painters, etc)...it will be 10 kids max, same kids as last year (with a few fun new additions   )

No, I don't think so.
Every outdoor kids' party I've attended (including my own girls' parties), the only "entertainment" was the birthday kid's own toys and everyone had a nice time.
At my house, we bring out all the ride-on toys, etc. bubbles, chalk and balls. We also have a small seesaw and a slide, a playhouse and a sand table and everything runs smoothly!

I have had backyard parties every year for DS.
We have:
Swingset (a small metal one)
Climber (since last year)
Roller coaster (since last year)
Bounce house (for this year). We got it after his party last year.
Water table
I just got a 120"x90" pool so several kids can go in the pool.
This year I am adding a pony for 1 hour. The bigger kids cannot use half of the equipment because it's really for younger kids up to 5-6 yo. So I am getting a tall pony so they all can enjoy it.

No crafts necessary!! It sounds like there will be PLENTY to entertain the kids!
