BAD breath issue - how to address?

Ok, there is someone in my office who honestly has the worst breath I've ever experianced in my life. The smell honestly surrounds her. She walks into a room and the stench takes over the entire room, regardless of the size of said room. How do I approach it? This girl talks to me and I have to hold my breath. It's a HUGE problem and it needs to be fixed. Chat Icon

I don't understand how her friends and/or family don't fill her in on her PROBLEM!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Ask them where they get their sh*t sandwiches from for lunch.

They may get the hint.

offer her gum or candy or even a toothbrush. . . . . .every time she comes over

tried gum, altoids.. she says NO!

And I think it's a deeper issue, cause she eats lollipops in the afternoon, but when she's done her breath still stinks!

Re: BAD breath issue - how to address?

My boss at my last job had THE worst breath. And she was a close talker. Ugh. I just sort of backed my head away when she came near me. Chat Icon

Are you close with any one in HR that you can ask their opinion? IMO it's a hygiene issue.

my old boss had this problem. his office wreaked whenever i went in there. that is what happens when you don't have dental and a flosser.

Seriously, with all the fashion donts and the bad smells lingering, I think we might work in the same office.

That being said, I have a coworker that bathes in cheap cologne. Several complaints have been placed with our manager because its so bad. Chat Icon

it may be a result of an underlying medical problem, or from a drug they are currently using. SO it is best to handle this sensitively.

Good luck

Re: BAD breath issue - how to address?

I know this sounds crazy, but I know someone who's breath smells like cat urine......its just so horrible. I have smelled no other breath like this. Chat Icon

But I also know this person hasnt gone to a dentist........in many, MANY years and I have a very strong feeling that this person has massive gum disease and way beyond control.

If your co-worker is that bad, she could have the same issue. I'm not too sure how these people can't smell their own breaths b/c I can smell mine when its kickin'(especially after garlic) and it ain't 1/2 as bad from what I have smelled on others.

Sorry, no advice to ya. The only help she is gonna get is to be advised to see a dentist. OR to email people instead of talking.......but thats probably unlikely.

Re: BAD breath issue - how to address?

Sounds like there is an underlying problem with their health most likely linked to their gums. They are literally rotting. I work with someone as well that has breath that would knock a buzzard off a sh!t wagon!

He doesn't go to the dentist because he doesn't have dental coverage. He thinks it's coffee breath but it's clearly a bigger problem. I offer him binaca all the time and it goes away for 5 minutes and then it's back.

I have no advice except I really feel for you.

Re: BAD breath issue - how to address?

Maybe she has gastro-intestinal problems. She might already be aware of her breath and might not be able to do anything about it because of a medical condition. On the other hand, if she is aware of it, an altoid wouldn't kill her.
