Bad Mom Moment

For the past few days, DS (6 weeks) will not sleep at all during the day - he will fall asleep on me and the second you put him down, he screams bloody murder. I am about to lose my mind.
So, my mom is over and she convinced me it was ok for him to nap on his stomach - he's actually napping right now like that. I have the monitor on him and she keeps checking on him, but I feel horrible - I know I shouldn't do this.Chat Icon

Re: Bad Mom Moment

That is the only way DS sleeps. I totally agree with you. We had the same issue, only fell asleep on mine and DH's chest. I have to say though he has amazing head and neck control. He's almost 8 weeks now so I'm definitely getting more comfortable with this as he gets older but I used to feel terrible about it too. I think as long as your DC moves his neck and head okay then its okay. I figured as long as he's comfortable and getting sleep thats all that mattered.

Does he sleep like that at night too, or only for naps?

Re: Bad Mom Moment

Michal, DS has been an unswaddled belly sleeper since he was 3 WEEKS OLD. He was a gassy baby, so i think the pressure of laying on his belly made him feel better.

Re: Bad Mom Moment

Luke naps on his belly during the day as well, not all the time but a lot of the time. Im not brave enough to do it overnights but I see no issue with it if you are keeping an eye on him.

Yes, but the way I looked at it, even at night he was only taking "naps". He only slept maybe 3 hours at a time but I know it was different bc we were sleeping. His bassinet was right next to our bed so I was right there. He gradually started sleeping longer so again I was more comfortable it, but now hes sleeping 6-7 hours overnight on his belly. He's still in our room too.

Re: Bad Mom Moment

I just asked the ped about it when he called about his other issues- he said it's fine as long as we're keeping an eye on him.

DITTO!!

I started napping Ds on his belly at 4 weeks and he would sleep! before it would be that he only fell alseep on one of us and if you moved him off, he woke up. Once i would move him off and lay him on his belly, he stayd asleep.

he has great head neck strength so i was ok with it, although at first DH and I slept in shifts to watch him while sleeping onhis belly b/c we were paranoid.

DS is 4 months and naps and sleeps on his belly and is fine. I also think the belly sleeping helped him with his gas issues.

At our very first appointment after DS was born, the ped told us to nap him on his belly so that he could work on his neck control and not get a flat headChat Icon

You do what you have to do. My DS slept on his stomach often. He had reflux and was just a total nightmare. He slept in the boppy pillow, in bed, next to me for months. How's that for a bad mommy. Chat Icon

Re: Bad Mom Moment

my DS is a belly sleeper too and he's fine and is now 13 months.

My DS sleeps with the side of his face flat to the mattress, my ped only was worried about it if he had slept facedown with his head propped on his arm. The ped said that makes an air pocket of carbon monoxide and that's why they don't like belly sleeping
