Re: Bad reflux

Well he may have put on weight since you started his meds you can call the dr. to adjust the dose.
You can try another med like Axid. Sometimes kids respond different brands.
Lastly you can ask your dr. about adding cereal to his bottles. My dr. Suggested adding it after nothing worked she was 4 months and it helped. The ped. association recommends not introducing "solids" before 6 months but do your research and make the best decision for you.

Re: Bad reflux

Can I ask you when you started zantac did it ever make it better? I ask b/c there are side effects to zantac experienced by some DC. Zantac actually made my DS SO much worse - I'm sure if you do a search you will find my posts. In the end we just did all the typical things - upright for 30 min after eating - burps every ounce or so when getting a bottle - i watched what i age for BF, never layed flat on his back etc. etc. HOWEVER, the only thing that really helped it was time...By 7 mos it was MUCH better and by 8 it was gone. We started the zantac maybe 3 weeks ago..along with the recommended cereal in her bottles. They also told me to have her sleep in her carseat for naps and at nightime, and since doing that she has been sleeping...
it just seems to be getting worse now. She hates to be burped because I think it hurts her when she does...it just kills me not knowing what to do Chat Icon

Re: Bad reflux

I work with this lady who wrote a book about reflux and babies. She's always available to give advice and support of you want to email her. I have a friend whose son has TERRIBLE reflux (to the point that he's not gaining weight), and Jan has been a really good source of information and support for my friend.

Here's a link to her website:

axid-bottle
mylanta-bottle

mylanta-bottle

Mylanta has been the big help!!! 1/2 tspn up to 3 times a day..i give her 2x's a day. My Ped GI told me to use this and it is in CVS (extra strength) It has helped so many ppls babies i know. She doesnt even have reflux really anymore! She has been a gem the last few days hardly even crying!!!! I bought one of those medicine droppers that is the little bottle?! She takes it right before her bottle and then i put her bottle in her mouth.

Re: Bad reflux

Axid, adding cereal (which never worked for us) but when DS went to the GI dr. she recommended giving him Mylanta (adult Mylanta) I would ask your ped, but this worked for us (not so much the vomiting but the actual reflux that you can hear)

Re: Bad reflux

For us, simply switching the formula worked after they made me try all the other things first.Chat Icon

They don't make it for kids. Most peds recommend 1/4 tsp or 1 ml of the adult version.

Re: Bad reflux

Yeah, no mylanta for kids, adult version. My Pediatric GI doc told us to give 1/2 tspn up to 3 times a day...i swear, it works for the gas and reflux..
As far as vomiting...she had this from the milk allergy too..once i got her on the neocate, it is completely gone.

Re: Bad reflux

The only meds that worked for my DS was prevacid. We tried all the other stuff and he still would vomit and swallow. He was gaining weight, but feeding small amounts frequently. It was driving me crazy! Once I started the prevacid he was new baby in just a couple of days. Only bad side effect - it wires them at first. THe first few days he couldn't sleep, but once he adjusted to it he went back to sleeping. Now that he's off of it - he sleeps even betterChat Icon

I wouldn't give Mylanta until you are directed to by a physician.

My son has silent reflux, but I have a friend who's baby has reflux & spits up alot, often. The ped told her that Zantac helps with the painful symptoms of reflux. It does not reduce the amount of spitup a baby may have.

Re: Bad reflux

Zantac doesnt stop the acid, it just basically helps the symptoms..there are acid blockers out there too..axid and zantac are in the same class of drugs..
I hope your little one gets better soon! Let me know how things turn out...
