Re: Bad Situation
Other than what others have suggested my only other advice is for him to wear a buttoned denim jacket. I went for an interview at an autistic school and they told me all the staff wear them daily because it is harder for the kids to bite through. They also all had clipped to their belt loops boxing gloves for the same reason.

Re: Bad Situation
Wow. This is a bad situation. As for the insurance, being that it happened at work, I would think he would be covered under workmans comp if he does have to go to the doctor. Did he try emailing his professor? Can he not show up to work tomorrow? I truly feel bad for him

I was going to say the same thing about workman's comp.

Re: Bad Situation
small update: Someone at the school did him a favor today - (I won't say anything further about that, you never know who's lurking) - but Rich now knows for sure that the kid is NOT sick in any way. Luckily, he is vaccinated, just in case.
I think he heard back from his Prof, but he couldn't go into detail with me...I'm sure I'll get the whole story later.

Re: Bad Situation
I worked with autistic children similiar to those your FH seems to be working with and unfortunately they do tantrum, bite, kick, even spit at times. This was something that I chose to do though, which is a little bit different from this case! At the program I worked in, we had to fill out an accident report any time any skin was broken if bit or kicked, etc from a child. There were many teachers on the staff that were well trained but a lot of aides that had only limited training. However, there was a very large support staff to consult if there were any problems and everybody was very helpful if there were any incidents. If there anything like that at this program? If so, hopefully your FH can find a more experienced teacher or support team member to help him out. If not, then he really should try to find another placement where he can learn nmore about the field. Either way, although the expreience is tough, I hope it turns out to be a rewarding one for him in the long run. I know my experience was for me.

Re: Bad Situation
I work with kids that are autistic as well.. And they do tend to have these behaviors, but I also did my master's in special ed and in no way should he, of all people, doing an internship, be the one that has to deal with this child. At this point, even the toughest of kids had a behavior plan and counselors and a team that are aware of the situations that occur when he gets upset...there Should be protocol set. What is the teacher doing to prevent this behavior or help to estinguish it? I know, in my classroom, I am the one to step in when a child is reacting in a negative way. If the child likes him, then he should be used as a positive reward for the good behavior, or as a calming technique....... And, thing god, you heard he is clear of all his shots and stuff, but legally schools do not need to know the medical history of their children.............................Good Luck--I hope this helped a little.
