Bally Total Fitness...
ok I just canceled my membership -
im such a pessimist - but it was wayyy to easy - i called up, told them I moved - gave them my new address (East Setauket) - they said "oh there is one in Lake Grove" - I said it was too far for me bc of traffic - and he said OK and cancelled it - no proof of address or anything..
anyone have any experience cancelling w/bally's?

Re: Bally Total Fitness...
I heard it was really tough to get out of a Bally's membership. When I got mine, they made me say that I couldn't cancel unless I moved somewhere more than 25 miles from my home and I need to provide proof. I would definitely contact your credit card company or they will probably keep on charging.

Re: Bally Total Fitness...
Oh yes, I have had a great experience with Ballys where they forged my name to a membership agreement. MAKE SURE you get a copy of the cancellation notice!!!

Re: Bally Total Fitness...
also your cc company cannot stop a merchant from making a charge. You have to battle it out after the charge is on your statement or has been approved. Its a PIA, this happened to me with another company. It went on for months! they will send you paperwork to fill out.

Re: Bally Total Fitness...
did you have a memebership or were you just paying the dues at this point. Because if it was the dues you can cancel at any point....but you will get things in the mail to rejoi, I still do and it's been over 4 years.
Definitely get it in writting too!

Re: Bally Total Fitness...
I was thinking of joining bally's. Why is it so hard to cancel your membership? Do you sign a contract or something?

Re: Bally Total Fitness...
Ballys is notorious for making their memberships virtually impossible to get out of. I would suggest calling the Customer Service department of the whole company (in California I believe). The number should be on your membership papers. The local gym staff are often misinformed.
I just recently cancelled my membership and the guy who worked at the gym said 'no problem.' I continued to be billed and when I called the corporate office, they told me that I was still locked in and needed proof that I had moved 25 miles or more away from a Ballys location. When I told them what the local gym guy said, they told me that I could file a complaint, but I still had to pay.
I was finally able to get out of the membership after sending a certified letter and numerous phone calls to the corporate office.
Good luck!!

Re: Bally Total Fitness...
Be careful with that gym. I signed up there years ago when I was in college for a 2 wk trial and decided to cancel, which I did over the phone as I was told I could. Well, needless to say, I had to fight with them to stop charging my credit card and than it also wound up as a derogatory item on my credit report for years. It was a nightmare!
