Bday Party in Texas Infects 18 people w. Covid
1 person went to a surprise birthday party and infected 18 relatives:

In other news, infections in NY appear to be trending slightly upward. Nassau County has 61 positive cases today (yesterday it was in the low 30s) and Suffolk has 50. Queens is back to over 100 as of today. (Source: https://covid19tracker.health.ny.gov/views/NYS-COVID19-Tracker/NYSDOHCOVID-19Tracker-TableView?%3Aembed=yes&%3Atoolbar=no&%3Atabs=n
The virus is not going away. Please stay safe and wear masks in locations where you can't social distance!

Bday Party in Texas Infects 18 people w. Covid
I think that's the least surprising news so far.
I'm in a local single parent group and they're all starting to have parties/playdates at each other's houses. It's just a matter of time before it happens there, too.

Re: Bday Party in Texas Infects 18 people w. Covid
i just saw the news about this party.
my cousin is hosting a party for his daughter, this weekend. when i was invited, i immediately said yes because we were on a downward trajectory and i miss my family so much.
now, i don't believe i'm going to go. i don't need the stress of wondering if i'm sick.

So irresponsible. There is a 1-2 week lag for infection rates to show- NY may think its out of the woods when the virus is still circulating.. I dont understand why people arent taking this seriously, who wants to risk being one of the unfortunate souls who need hospital treatment and potentially a ventilator??

Re: Bday Party in Texas Infects 18 people w. Covid
NY also tested 16,000 more people yesterday than it did the day before. The actual percentage is still pretty low. The numbers will fluctuate. Unless it is a steady uptick, it is not concerning. The actual percentage of people testing positive went down. Yesterday LI was 1.1, today 1.0. NYC was 1.4 yesterday, today 1.2.

my children have been having play dates at peoples house!
when exactly will it be ok to start having them?
we are down its not going away so never again can they see their friends?
They are also going to camp this summer.
I am not tying to be snarky but I really want to know when we will be allowed to do things again?

So this is weird. DH had his yearly physical a few weeks back and got his script for the routine blood work. On the bottom of the script was a test for Covid antibodies. He did not ask for this test nor did the Dr discuss it with him.
Are they now just testing anyone who goes for any blood work for antibodies do you think? And then does that number go in as a "new" positive case? (his came back negative but I"m curious now)

If you are comfortable allowing your kids to go on playdates and the other parents are all on the same page, then it is "allowed". Just understand the risks you are taking. You are "allowed" to do whatever you want... but do not be shocked if someone gets sick unfortunately. This is not going away. People do NOT have to be showing symptoms to be sick. A child could get exposed today, come to your house tomorrow, and you won't know for another week or 2. It is a risk. You have to weigh its worth.

No clue but yes, it is added in to the positive cases. I thought that most people requested this but it sounds pretty shady to me if they are doing this to see if they can increase the numbers. Everyone I know came back negative which was surprising as these are people who swore they had it late last year/early this year.

No one is trying to "inflate the numbers". They are trying to get a handle on just how many people are walking around with this disease so we can get a better handle on it. Enough with the conspiracy crap. Without TESTING we will never know just how far spread this is and we will NEVER get a handle on it. It makes PERFECT sense to test everyone in my opinion.

This wasn't testing to see if he was walking around with the virus though. It was antibody testing. To see if he ever had it in the past. Not sure what that would be used for.

I've been tracking suffolk's cases all along and the numbers are listed separately so I don't see any shady attempt to inflate numbers. They also include the percentage that test positive so you can get a handle on how it's spreading regardless of any increase or decrease in testing. Yesterday it was 14% positive which is the lowest I've seen yet.

Yeah my DH really didn't care- they were taking blood anyway, but I found that interesting that they tested him for antiboides when he didn't ask for it and never had any symptoms of the virus in the past. I can see if he spoke with his doctor and said, yeah last month I had a fever, cough, etc, then the doctor ordered a test to see if he had it, kwim? So maybe they just test everyone who gets blood work to see... who knows.

No conspiracy. The numbers should not be together as they are in NY and other states.
So if you had covid already and was a positive case a month or so ago and then get an antibody and it says positive, are you not down as 2 and not 1? How is that right then?

If someone tests positive for antibodies, even if they never had symptoms, shouldn't they be included in the overall NY numbers, since they did at one point have the virus? Or do you mean they are added into the daily positives? Either way, the percentage of people testing positive is unbelievably low, and has been since the beginning of June. NY is currently in a very good place, and while I don't have a crystal ball to tell me whether things will stay that way, for today I will be happy with our progress. We are one of only four states who are on track to contain covid- along with NJ, CT, and Mass. Based on where we were in April, that is beyond impressive and something all New Yorkers should be proud of.

Bday Party in Texas Infects 18 people w. Covid
Stories like this make me anxious to do things. We have really just been in our little bubble. Next week, we are meeting my DH's family at an outside location, half way between Boston and Albany. We were also looking to visit my sister on LI in the next few weeks.

This!
Unless they were one the “asymptomatic” people I hear about. If you feel even the slightest bit under the weather, you stay home!! I did that before covid. If I ever feel a little something starting, I cancel plans and stay in. It’s rude not to. Nothing like showing up to a party and you say hello to someone who is OBVIOUSLY sick. I’m always like wtf , fomo much?

People have to make their own choices about what they're comfortable with regarding playdates, parties, summer camp, etc. But as I stated in my original comment, don't be surprised if spreads quickly in your circle of friends or at summer camp because it only takes 1 person that's presymptomatic to spread it to everyone there.

They said a nephew was coughing at the party, so yeah, he was sick and not asymptotic or even pre-symptomatic.
