Beans - stalling weight loss? (low-carb related)
I've been eating a lot of beans lately, rather than my usual fish & veggies (I don't eat meat). I just haven't been in the mood for fish lately, but I still have it maybe once or twice a week. I haven't weighed myself in 2 weeks, but I just *feel* heavier. The beans are all South Beach Phase 1 approved, but I'm wondering if having so many of them is stalling my weight loss?
Here's what I usually eat:
Breakfast - usually 3 hard boiled eggs OR a protein shake with low-carb protein powder, skim milk, flax seed oil, amino acids, 1 tbsp natural peanut butter, 2 packets of splenda
Snack - dannon carb control vanilla yogurt
Lunch - either 1 bowl of my version of the WW chili which has pinto, kidney, fat free refried beans, soy crumbles instead of meat, taco seasoning, ranch dressing powder, diced tomatoes OR 1 bowl organic lentils with diced tomatoes and reduced fat feta cheese
Snack: no sugar added fudge popsicle OR sugar free Jello pudding
Dinner - chilli or lentils - whichever I didn't have for lunch. I usually go back for a second bowl.

I think we are on the same boat. I was on SB for the summer, then went on my HM and all down hill after that. I have been trying to get back on it, but have been having a hard time losing weight. I do eat beaans because I am a vegetarian also.

Beans can make you gassy - maybe you're bloated? I find those soy crumble wreak havoc on me, so I don't eat them anymore.

Well, I eat beans a lot and even with eating a lot of fiber, I have a very sensitive stomach with IBS among other things.
After doing some research on my own, I started taking charcoal tablets after my meals. It has helped with the bloat and keep me er, regular.
Do you think your body is having a hard time digesting the beans, or do you think your issue is that you need to switch it up and vary your diet to stimulate weight loss?

Re: Beans - stalling weight loss? (low-carb related)
Thanks for all the suggestions. Since the beans are a relatively new thing for me - up until 2 weeks ago, I was mostly eating fish and salad for lunch/dinner - so it's possibly that the beans are just making me bloated (which is sad, because they taste so good ).
I may try switching things up and not eating quite so many bean-based meals in a day - maybe having soup and a salad for lunch instead.
I also noticed that I've been adding a lot more salt to my food lately for some reason, so that might have something to do with it too. I've never been a salt person before either

I would totally try the charcoal-- this is the brand that I use..
Charco Caps
I seriously buy them in bulk because EVERY single thing I put in my body bloats me.
On a side note-- can you send me the veggie chili recipe??

Thanks!! I'm definitely going to try the Charco Caps.
Here is the chili recipe I use - it's basically a modified version of the "Weight Watchers Best Chili" that's been posted on here, but modified for low-carb, vegetarian types
1 bag of Morningstar Veggie Crumbles (to replace meat - even my DH who is a huge meat eater loves the veggie crumbles) 1 can Kidney Beans 1 can Pinto Beans 1- 4 ounce can chopped green chilis 1 can fat free refried beans 1 - 15 ounce can diced tomatoes 1 - 16 ounce can (or 2 - 8 ounce cans) of tomato sauce 1 large onion 1 package taco seasoning 1 package Hidden Valley Ranch dry dressing mix
Chop onion and cook with veggie crumbles until the crumbles are defrosted. Add the rest of the ingredients. The original recipe says not to drain anything, but I usually drain the beans anyway. Otherwise, it's a little too liquidy for my taste. Also, I sometimes add a second package of the Hidden Valley Ranch for a more tangy flavor.
Bring to a boil over medium heat and then simmer for 15 minutes.

Thanks-- I always drain my beans as well-- it's also extra sodium you do not need in that liquid!

Good point!! I hadn't thought about that. My other favorite bean recipe is sort of like the Greek dish called Garides:
1 can of organic lentils 1 can of Muir organic diced tomatoes with garlic and onion (though I prefer Contadina Recipe Ready diced tomatoes with zucchini, carrots and onions, I can never seem to find it in NYC) 1/2 block of reduced fat feta 1 yellow onion 1 tbsp tomato paste (optional)
Chop onion and sautee in pan. When the onion is translucent, add lentils and tomatoes at medium/high heat. Microwave 1/2 block of feta for 15 seconds and add to pan. Stir occasionally. When the ingredients take on a pinkish hue, it's done.

Defintiely think it is the beans...they are sooo filled with sodium. Weeks when I have the WW chili for lunch a few times I am up 2-3 pounds the day or two after. I only eat it early in the week since I weigh in on Saturday.

Thanks Kim! That definitely explains it then. I've been making the chili at least once every week and eating it the rest of the week (along with my other beans). Time to go back to salad and fish. I really like that chili though
