Re: Bed Times

10pm sounds reasonable...

but it also depends on the 10 year old... how does the 10 year old get up in he morning.. easily or problematic?

Re: Bed Times

I think a lot depends on what time he needs to be up for school. Does he get up easy in the morning?

As a former 4th grade teacher, I saw way too many children tired in the am or unfocused. I'd say 8:30-9pm (depending on other activities, etc.)

Re: Bed Times

DS is 11. He is allowed to stay up until 8:30, then he goes upstairs and can read for an hour, lights out at 9:30. He gets up at 7am 3 days a week, and 6:30am the 2 days he has orchestra before school.

Re: Bed Times

I think it depends upon the child. Does he get up for school easily? Make the bus? Does morning chores? If not, then I would think he needs more sleep rather than less.

FWIW my 2 1/2 and 4 1/2 year old go to bed at about 8-8:15. I think I would let them stay up until 9 pm when they were in middle school. I would want them in bed with the lights out by about 9:15 or 9:30. If they had trouble getting up in the morning, I would have to reevaluate their bedtimes.

Re: Bed Times

DS is 8.5 and he's in bed by 9 or a bit earlier during the week.

Re: Bed Times

As others have said, it depends on the child. My son is 10 and in bed by 9pm on school nights. We wind down with family time and they are in their own beds by 9:15-9:30. I know it is the right time because they are OUT within 5-10 minutes.

He complains (a lot) because many of his friends are allowed to stay up later.. but I just tell him that I don't make the rules for his friends.. only for him. Chat Icon

On non-school nights they are allowed to stay up until 10 and if there are parties or if we are doing something at night we try to play it by ear.. but they are usually begging to sleep before midnight!

It all depends on the morning. My 8 & 10 year old have a 9pm bedtime (meaning they're in their beds but not necessarily sleeping).

We moved their bedtime to 9:30pm/10pm but they were crankier in the morning.

My 4 year old goes to bed at 7:30
My 6 year old and 8 year old are in bed by 8:00 lights out no later than 8:30. For a 10 year old, I would say 9:00 is ideal for a school night.

Re: Bed Times

9:00 was my first thought, but then I would ask what time he needs to be up in the morning.

I have a 7, almost 8 year old. I want his bedtime to be 8:00, but it never happens. I am lucky he is in bed at 9:00. School starts at 8:00 am and they take a bus, so he needs to get up at 6:30 every day.
