bedtime for a newborn?

What time do you put your newborn to bed? I'm trying to do her last bottle around 10:30 or so, but she gets one at 7 ish too. Do I consider after that one to be her bedtime? She's only 5 weeks so it's not like she will really sleep that long.... you would think that I haven't done this before! Chat Icon

Re: bedtime for a newborn?

DD's last bottle is usually between 930-1030 (more towards 1030 i've realized). It usually takes about 30-45mins to feed/burp her and rock her to sleep.

I put her to "bed" at 7, even though she woke up through the night at that age (5 weeks)...by "bed" I mean lights off, in her crib, music on..

Re: bedtime for a newborn?

since ds #2 was born the latest i put him in the crib as 830... anytme he eats past 7pm is considered bedtime to me... then if he wakes he gets fed in his room... i find he sleeps longer stretches when he is in hiis crib.... by 4 weeks he was only waking once a night.... but it is really dependant on your child... my older ds was a night owl and would be up until 2 am every night...

wow, I'm jogging my memory here but I *think* we used to do the same thing (last bottle at 10:30). He would be up again at 3 and 7 very early on but eventually he would go right to 6am and then wake. Definately by 8 weeks.

Re: bedtime for a newborn?

We started a "bedtime" routine about this age and it starts about 9:30 with a bath, book and bottle. She knows it's bedtime then and around 8wks she started sleeping 6hrs at this time. I tried to move it up, but she would have NONE of it. Your lil one will let you know which works for them as bedtime, but it sounds like the later one is the best option now.

Re: bedtime for a newborn?

My DS routine is somewhat like this... but hes jsut reaching his 2 month mark next week, and he's getting even better...

8pm he has his last bottle...evey other day is a bath at 730... he usually falls alseep in my arms after he finishes the bottle... I have to hold him for at least 20 mins before I put him down or else he'll wake up. Once he's down he uslaly sleeps till about 11pm... and only takes half a bottle... then sleeps till about 7:30/8am. Then we start our day.

I'm trying to make the 11pm feeding quicker... since he likes to just stay awake once he starts his bottle...and won't actually eat... will just take his time. I'm thinking of giving him a bigger nipple for that feeding... sometimes that feeding which is only HALF his normal, lasts about 35 mins or so. And, if I don't feed him, he'll cry and cry... and eat his hands...soo I know he's hungry LOL
