behaviorist recommendation

Can anyone recommend a behaviorist? DS has a lot of behavioral issues and after 2 years, I need help. He does get CPSE services, vyt the off the charts behaviors are only at home, so the district would not provide. Any recommendations are appreciated. I am in Huntington area and ideally, the person or agency would take insurance.

Thank you!

Re: behaviorist recommendation

We have someone from Kidz Therapy. They contract with our district, but I think they take private cases too.

behaviorist recommendation

Would the school recommend someone? In our school there was a teacher who was qualified to do it at night. They called it parent training and they worked with the parents and child at home.

Hmmm I edited this because I just remembered that I believe she was only able to do it because the district approved it. UGH sorry. But still worth asking someone at the school of another agency like Kidz Therapy that you can call.

Also call Variety Learning Center in Syosset they can possibly recommend someone,. Contact info is Carolyn Gammerman at [email protected] or 516-364-8580, ext. 3237.

And check out this website there is lots of info at Early Childhood Direction Center

Sorry I just have a question- how is a behaviorist different than therapy that takes place in school, like ABA? I am just wondering if my DS would benefit from one and if they come to your house outside of school hours?

I think parent training and behaviorist are one in the same? You can read all the books and someone can explain to you what to do, but to have someone come to your home and show you AND your husband how to work with your child's behavior is very helpful. They may also accompany you places outside the house if you need them to - to the playground, supermarket, etc.

If you google parent training you will find more info.

Yes, they do come to your house. This is what I am looking for. I get 1/2 hr. Of parent training in the school, but I need someone to come in, see the behaviors and come up with a behavior modification plan. Its different from ABA for some kids because its managing behaviors not a direct service like a therapy at school.

Thank you for your response. I am wondering if this is something I can ask at my next CPSE meeting in the Spring. We do get parent training 1x a month at the school as well (meet with the school psychologist).

The parent training that they provide at the school for me was also not helpful to what I needed at home. I tried to get my district to pay for it and they would not. I do know someone who's district does pay for it - so depends on the district. It definitely pays to ask. Good luck!

My district will not provide it because as of right now, behaviors are not impacting him at school. They don't pay when its only at home you're loosing your mind!! Lol

I do not recommend Variety at all for help with behavior.

I sent you an FM - if I know what insurance you have I might be able to recommend some people for you.
