Being a parent, what has your opinion on things changed?
I have to say, seeing the other posts on NFR has made realize how much being a parent has changed my perspective on things. I just want to when I hear non-parents saying, "I will NEVER do this". I just think its funny how much goes out the window when you have a kid.

Re: Being a parent, what has your opinion on things changed?
I know exactly what you mean.... there are just certain things you can say "never" to all you want BEFORE you have kids... but once you become a parent, that little rule book can go right out the window.
One thing that changed for me was that I thought I would readily, when necessary, spank my child. And I made no apologies for it. Now with Jake, I can honestly say that I want nothing more than to never have to spank him. I just don't want to. I still feel that a certain type and amount of spanking is ok, if a parent chooses to do so. BUT, I no longer feel this is a disciplinary method I would use or want to use.
On the flipside though, I always said that I would never co-sleep. I've stuck to that one firmly and I intend to continue that with Jake and if we have another child.
The difference is that now that I am a parent, I can totally and completely understand why others would choose to do that or "give in", and why/how it is possible that even I could change my stance on that someday.

I have tosay, I would have said the same thing. But as Jordana gets older I have definitely thought about it. Never bought one, but I have thought about it. I can't imagine taking a child to Disneyworld. The crowds
I said I would NEVER put DD in bed with me. Well that went out the window. I also never thought I would let her sleep in the swing- she did that too.

Re: Being a parent, what has your opinion on things changed?
I swore I would never use a leash, but as I posted in the other thread, we used a harness for my son when we were in Disney. THANK GOD we did.
I swore I would never let my children into my bed... well, fast forward to my 4 year old with an over-active imagination and lots of bad dreams, and he sleeps with us on occasion.
But then again, at one point in my life, I SWORE I was never having kids too

OK, I think i already changed my mind on the leash issue - and he isnt even walking yet...
My favorite "I'll never" vow is "I will NEVER put my kid in front of a TV until he is 2 or 3"
BWaaaah HAAAHHhhhh HHAAaaahhhhhh
Look how cute and clueless I was....
LISTEN UP, naive pregnant idiot - in less than a year, your kid will recognize every Noggin theme song!!! He will know them because you planted his cranky a s s in front of the TV at 3 mts old, and do it every morning while you get ready for work, at 2 or 3 in the morning when you fumble for the free on demand Noggin so you can try and nap on the couch as the TV beast is appeased....
"No TV for my little baby's developing brain."
uh huh.

My brothers and I are 13 years apart and my mom use to put those leash things on them and I use to laugh at how stupid they look, but my mom would say Melissa when your older and have your own kids you will think differently! Well she was right, I just bought one for my DD because kids can run away and get lost in seconds no matter how tough of a mother you are! Its a totally different world now from when we were kids.
I also said I would never have my child sleep in my bed with me, well that went out the window, shes 2 1/2 and still in our bed! I wouldn't have it any other way.

Re: Being a parent, what has your opinion on things changed?
i think it depends on the never...I said i would never give my child a paci, and both of them used them, DD was weaned at 9 months and #2 will be weaned shortly. I said i would never give my toddler french fries, candy or ice cream and she gets them rarely, but sometimes all three on one day :)
Still as of now though, I would NEVER use a leash..that one so far i am def sticking with.

Re: Being a parent, what has your opinion on things changed?
I said I wouldnt let Megan watch tv....here I am LOL
I said I wouldnt put food directly on her highchair tray..its the only way to get her to eat anything!
I said I wouldnt pick her up in the middle of the night when she was crying....no other way has worked for us yet!
I said I wouldnt have a problem with a little spanking every now and then (when she is older)..I dont see how I will EVER be able to do that and yet on the flip side I was worried I wouldnt be able to discpline and be strict and I have NO PROBLEM with being stern with her at all!
The one thing I didnt and still wont change my mind about...even with another child is breastfeeding. I KNOW its not for me and I will never even try.

That was mine too.
That went flying out the door when my collickly baby was born into this world, and the only 5 minutes of time a day she would give me to shower, was when she was sitting in front of baby einstein!

Re: Being a parent, what has your opinion on things changed?
My baby never watched TV...until this week. Now I serve him his meals in front of it. While, Leo and I still eat at the table!
I wasn't very judgemental before, I guess I just did not care enough to judge. now, as a mother, I constantly judge other people's parenting and decisions.

So true Liza. And even more did you ever think you would know the damn theme songs to Baby Einsteins or any other cartoon. I parked my sons little toosh right in front of the TV to quiet his arse down.

I said I would never let my son listen to Hip Hop only classical. Ha ha what a friggin joke. You should see the little hip hop dances I do for him to Hip Hop music when I want to make him laugh or see him smile.

Re: Being a parent, what has your opinion on things changed?
There isn't enough space for me to write up the things I said I wasn't going to do....
Lets just say....everything changes when you have a child. Everyone can tell you that, but it is bloody shocking when it happens. Bloody shocking.
