Being pregnant and having pets...
anyone know what the deal is with this.
We have a cat in the house and I haven't spoken to the doctor about it yet cuz I just found out i'm pregnant. Is it safe to have a pet in the house while being pregnant. I don't touch the litter box at all, DH cleans it but what about being near it? I am really concerned about this. I mean i've been near it all this time without knowing I was pregnant.
I really don't have any other place to move the litter box except for the bathroom...
Is anyone else pregnant with a pet in the house? How are you handling things...

I am pretty sure it's okay to have a pet in the house, and having DH clean up the litter is a good idea. You shouldn't touch the feces, cat feces can have toxoplasmosis which is harmful to the baby.

Re: Being pregnant and having pets...
You are fine with the cat in the house, petting it and everything are fine the only thing you should avoid is cleaning the litter box... there is a very very very small risk for toxoplasmosis. Especially if your cat is an indoor-only cat, the risk is super low. You have just as much risk of getting toxoplasmosis from eating undercooked meat, it's just good to play it safe and stay away from cleaning the litter box.

We have two cats. DH cleans the litter box. You can pet your cat, just wash your hands after.

Re: Being pregnant and having pets...
we have 2 dogs and it's been fine. With cats...you need to stay away from cat poop which can cause toxoplasmosis. It'sa good thing your DH empties the litter box, but having a cat in general is totally safe.
They say babies raised with kids are less likely to have allergies towards animals.

Re: Being pregnant and having pets...
Ok but the litter box is in the bathroom so is it safe for me to be in there with the litter box as long as I don't touch it and clean it....
I just have no other place to put it...

Re: Being pregnant and having pets...
As long as your cat is healthy and an indoor cat you are totally safe. I spoke to my vet, who specializes only in cats and did online research as well as speaking to the doctor. The "don't touch liter" is really for outdoor cats and unhealthy cats. It is also VERY VERY rare to have any health problems from the liter box if you wash your hands and wear gloves when changing it. You will be fine.

Re: Being pregnant and having pets...
when i was pregnant i had 3 cats and had my dh cleaned the litter box. I stayed away from him when he was cleaning it - thats all. If your cats are indoors they probably don't have toxoplasmosis Also, i know someone who had toxoplasmois before she was pregnant, and she was immune to it. And when she got pregnant, the doctor told her since she had it already it won't harm the baby. It is dangerous if you get it while you are pregnant. Also, be careful if you are planting plants outside and turning the dirt - because of the oustide cats.
When I was pregnant my doctor did a blood test on me to check if i had it. I didn't have it and she just told me not to change the litter.
