Best advise you got (for prego or new moms)
So, my SIL is going to be a new mom and I want to give her some great advise, but my youngest is 4 and it's been a while since I had a newborn. I feel like when I had DS1 over 6 years ago these boards were filled with great advise, product raves, helpful hints, etc. I don't see it as much on the pregnancy boards.
Anyway, figured we can help some new moms to be out like the moms helped us a few years ago.
Here's some things I remember that were great -
Clouds and Stars zipper sheets. They were the best!! Now looking at the website they definitely added more products http://www.cloudsandstars.com/
Also, one thing I forgot to do or wish I did was bring a boppy to the hospital. Would've made life easier.
Anyway, what's some of your fav products or advise you got on here?
Thanks!

Def register for a Rock n Play. It is all my two kids slept in at first. My DS hated the bassinet and I didn't even bother with a bassinet for my DD.

Don't open everything!
I got so much stuff and opened every pacifier and bottle and swaddle etc
They never took a paci. I needed diff bottles bc of reflux and they hated being swaddled
Could have returned them all for diapers!

Yes!! I opened the pacifiers because my DS took them. but DD refused them.
also don't wash all the clothes. the baby will probably grow out of them fast at the newborn stage and you'll want to return for bigger sizes.
my biggest advice i give is put the baby in the crib the first night home (if you can) and put them down awake. then walk away! with DS i rocked him until he was a year then had to CIO. with DD...i let her cry for a couple of minutes (as a newborn never longer than that) then she'd fall asleep on her own. now i just put her to bed wide awake (7 months) and she smiles at me then goes to sleep.

Buy (or borrow) and watch the Happiest Baby on the Block DVD Do it BEFORE baby comes and you are so sleep deprived and the baby is screaming her head off and you are just desperate. Watch it early and learn the techniques so when the time comes you can just try them out on a screaming baby.
Definitely send the baby to the nursery at night. It's the last 2 nights (or so) of sleep you will ever get again for a LONG time.
Don't waste too much time and effort picking out the "best" bottle. Because only your baby will tell you what the best bottle is. Just buy a starter pack of something cheap and go from there. Chances are you'll go through a few before finding the one that works for your baby
Always Infinity overnight pads are awesome and sure beat the hospital pads they give you Even if you double them up. Still much less bulk

I was going to come on and write the same thing.
It was the best thing EVER.
I give it to every new mom I know.

Sound machine rock n play
talk to your friends and come on these boards with questions just take it 1 day at a time, it doesn't matter if the house is a mess or the laundry/dishes aren't done... just take a deep breath and enjoy the baby... it goes by quicker than your realize...
lots of burp cloths lots of muslin blankets lots of onesies all the frilly over the top outfits are nice once in a while but you wont get much use out of it rent or borrow a breast pump that's $300 you don't get back LOL if breast feeding doesn't work for you don't take all the tags off and don't open everything up from the baby shower get a few onesies in the newborn size just in case you do end up with a small baby (but no need to take tags off)

The best advice I got was to not listen to the advice everyone tries to give you and that what works for one baby does not necessarily work for another.

Best advise you got (for prego or new moms)
The best advice I was given was from dd pediatrician--he told me to follow my instincts and ignore everyone's opinions on what I "needed" to do. My favorite baby items were the adian and anis swaddle blankets, the fisher price snuga bunny swing and my city mini gt stroller. I agree with pp who said not to open and sterilize everything-my dd did not use a pacifier and barely use a bottle (she was entirely bf and I introduced a sippy cup at five months).
I loved the baby bargains book.

Re: Best advise you got (for prego or new moms)
Thanks ladies... This list is awesome! Anyone know how to repost on pregnancy so they can see?
Also want to add... Sound Machine was awesome! Started using it around 8 - 9 months and worked great! DS2 I never rocked so he got used to going to sleep on his own when I laid him down Zipper pajamas are the best and easiest. Snaps got annoying and took forever Like others said... Don't wash anything till you know they'll wear it. They pretty much live in cute pajamas the first few weeks. No need for these fancy clothes for newborns. They look cute, but we never wore them. Take anything you can from the hospital!! Diapers, paci's, pads, socks, the underwear they give you, belly wrap, formula, comb, etc. This way you see what the baby likes first before even opening anything else. They will give you a ton of diapers. Also, sounds funny, but the hospital underwear was fine! Better than ruining your own. Just toss theirs when done.
