best doctor for disc herniations if surgery is needed!
hi girls...trying to gather info. i have a few disc bulges and herniations. when i tweak wrong...my entire abdomen, pelvic area and legs go almost completely numb for 20 seconds and i can barely move. luckly this only happens a few times a week.
i went to doctors but was told that while ttc they couldnt fix anything....alas i was ttc for 3 years and going to have the baby this month.
i really need to line a meeting up with a doc that can really treat me and hopefully fix the disc issues with something besides motrin bc that wont help when i go numb.
any feedback or names would be helpful!!! tia!!

Dr. Vincent Leone in Great Neck. I trust this man with my life!!!! I've been a patient since 1997 and he just did my microdisectomy in 2010. he does not jump for surgery unless its absolutely necessary. he is really one of the best surgeons out there.

DH had to get a discectomy two years ago as his herniated discs were compressing his spinal cord. He saw Dr. Dewal from Long Island Spine Specialists (located in Commack). He was great and DH had immediate relief and the recovery wasnt bad either.
I was also treated by Dr. Dewal for bulging discs suffered from a car accident. Again, he was great!

Honestly, in my experience with this sort of thing with several relatives, the absolute best place for any spinal issue is Hospital for Special Surgery. Their doctors are the leading researchers and educators in their fields. They have an office in Uniondale so that their doctors are able to see patients here on the Island. Their website will help you locate a specialist www.hss.edu .
Otherwise, please feel free to see Dr. Stephen Geiger. My husband has very similar issues to yours, and Dr. Geiger has been fantastic. (And Motrin will not help at all with nerve pain - which is what you have.) Your course of treatment will likely include an epidural steroid shot into your disc followed by physical therapy a couple weeks after. The timing of this is critical; my husband was at first seeing a neuro/physiological group, and they totally screwed this up.
Hopefully, the extent to which you are pain is only because of the additional pressure from your growing baby. I would still advise going for a consult, so that you can be as healthy and active as you would like to be! Good luck!

I'm going to second HSS. i've had 3 back surgeries in the last 2 years. the first two were done at LIJ. and while i still like my surgeon, HSS blows LIJ out of the water for care.
HSS specializes in this stuff, they have policies and procedures that are standard across all docs in the hospital, and they are designed to minimize the risk of problems post surgery. If i had my 1st one done there, i might have avoided number 2, and number 4 that's probably going to be done before this year is out.
I see Dr. Harvinder Sandhu, who comes to the Island 2x per month. I just saw him this morning in Uniondale actually. He's very good, excellent reputation, does research as well. Plus he will never rush you, spends as much time as you need to answer any and all questions. I highly recommend him.
I will aslo mention, Dr. Andrew Hect at Mt. Sinai. He does alot of work with the Jets and Giants. I know 2 people who had lumbar fusions with him, and rave about him. the only reason i have never seen him, is he doesn't take my insurance and my deductible is too high.

I highly recommend Dr. Mullins in west islip.
He did my back surgery and he is amazing! He sat and talked with me for hours before the surgery to answer all my questions/fears and to make sure surgery was my best option. I have my life back thanks to this man. My biggest fear was how my back was going to be when I was pregnant and it was fine!
He operates at good sam...while I was there, every single nurse that treated me said he is an amazing surgeon. I was even able to go home the same day, most other patients with the same surgery do not.
