Best place for Psych eval's? Or rec's?
ETA-
Noahs 4 and 1/2 and his CPSE evals are this month ..the yearly ones. IDK how it translates to CSE ...( meaning retests etc?? ) ...
So I wanted to request the psych eval now b/c of that.
Noah was evaluated at 19 mnths by MKS agency ..that was for EI and his only Psych eval.
He gets private therapy and the privatetherapist mentioned what I said below...
His teachers feel all is well (I dont, neither does the therapist)....
He is being seen at the Developmental PED now ( 1/20 is next appointment)...BUT she is a nuerologist and the therapist feels he should have a psychologist eval as well as nuerologist.
Thats where I'm at and really as always am CONFUSED where to go/what to do. lol
Ok so some of you know whats been going on.
My son is in private therapy...he is 4 and 1/2 . She said she is seeing red flags for ADHD , possible PPD-NOS ( I dont agree with that , but want an eval).
his last psych eval was at 19 mnths old.
We are in the midst of school district testing through his pre school.
I DO NOT want them doing the psych eval.
2 questions..
1-Do I just call the district and request the psych eval and tell them why I am ..
2- His therapist reccomended Variety for the eval. Anyone have any good reccomendations for me?
TIA!!!

Yes, call the district and tell them you have some concerns about your son and that you want a psych evaluation. I used Steve Reid. Not a real personable guy, but knows and one of a few who can test for kids with kids on the spectrum, if you want to rule it out. I know Liza a recommended someone awhile ago to me, but not sure of the name. Tell them you want an agency to do it and pick who you want. Telll them you want someone who is knowledgeable in the area of kids on the spectrum. That may help you even if you dont believe he is.

DS was evaluated through EI through Up We Grow, Dr. Vaughn. I was very pleased with his evaluation. I do not know how it works outside of going through EI but I assume you can call the agency directly.

You will need the schools permission because your son is NOT EI anymore.

I am almost positive this is who evaluated DS at school (for transition from EI to Pre-k). Now, our district is sending out their Psychologist to start doing evals. for Kindergarten. I'm OK with that, because DS already has a diagnosis.
I would call the district and tell them you'd rather go with xyz agency. I wish I knew of an agency that did this, but, I'm not sure.

Re: Best place for Psych eval's? Or rec's?
Marion Salomon's evaluators were great. I really liked the psychologist they sent. I can look up her name if you are interested. She definitely didn't come in all 'bubbly' or anything like that but she "connected" with me. She just gave me a feeling of being understood. In fact, after the eval, my dd had music therapy, so she hung around to see how engaged my dd is and put that in the report. I told her exactly what I wanted the school district to give us and when she attended the CPSE meeting she clearly was helping us get what we wanted. She also gave us a run down on how things will go, and even changed something in her report we didn't feel was accurate (she changed it without any complaints). As it turns out, she has a special needs child, which many times helps with true empathy. I even called the agency right after to thank them for having such a wonderful professional on their staff.
The EI psych that we had was ABSOLUTELY AWFUL, and I would clearly make sure you never get him. He works through a ton of agencies and he is psych at an elementary school.

Re: Best place for Psych eval's? Or rec's?
Check with the district. We are getting ready for transition and I was told that the psych eval is usually only done every 3 years, unless there is a compelling reason to have another one done. You have a number of concerns, so you might be able to push them for another one, but I would document everything and tell them what is going on - perhaps even in writing - if they are hesitant to approve it. You can always pay privately, but from what i hear, it can be very expensive.
We had all of our evaluations done by Little Village and they were great.

Re: Best place for Psych eval's? Or rec's?
a psych veal can be done through a neurologist... if you do not want the school involved it will be done through your insurance...
he will be entering CSE from CPSE if i am correct.
you can go through an agency as well, but a CSE transition is usually done through a Dev Ped or Neurologist, unless you go through the school.
my friend just went through this with her 5 year old.. the school told her to see a Neuro for the psych eval. no agency, because most agencies are used for EI & CPSE.
i could be wrong, but that is my understanding of it.
we had our psych eval done through EI and we do NOT plan to do another Diagnositc Evaluation, just the standard one required for transitioning.

Re: Best place for Psych eval's? Or rec's?
My DS's only psych eval was done when he was in EI, we had an additional/supplemental eval when we were transitioning to CPSE. So, again, I am not sure the district will pay for another eval before 3 years is up, but I am not an expert. I would ask the developmental ped and the therapist if they would be willing to write a letter to the district to support your request for a new psych eval.
D, I just want to tell you, don't be afraid of the PDD-NOS diagnosis. I was upset when he first got it, but really it was the best thing that could have happened. It opened the door to services he so badly needed and probably would not have received without the diagnosis. Even if they aren't 100% sure what is going on with him, they may give him the diagnosis so he gets the help he needs.

It will be 3 yrs since his last eval this month I think...If I figured that out right. ( he'll be 5 in 5 months) ...
I am not afraid of the diagnosis at all..Hell I would WELCOME it b/c I know people would finally stop and listen and he would not be falling through the cracks. I have justread so much on it in the last 4 yrs and some of the questionairres etc..he just doesnt seem to fit the mold even stretching it.

My son's pysch eval was done by Little Village. I really liked the evaluator (Debra, I think). She really took her time with us and I think stayed pretty late answering all of our questions.

Re: Best place for Psych eval's? Or rec's?
When the kids transition from Pre-K to district, they drop the P (from CPSE because they are no longer in prek).
I **think** this is how it was explained at our districts workshop.
If you want FM me and I'll share some info from my districts workshop.

Re: Best place for Psych eval's? Or rec's?
If you want to do it on your own, you can call your insurance company to get a list of providers.
We use a great Neurologist that take insurance you can try. My friends' son is 4 and he was diagnosed PDD-NOS and ADHD by this Doctor. He has had services and may no longer be classified PDD-NOS
My DD was diagnosed PDD-NOS by one Developmental Ped, but then was seen by a Psych at the Mc Carton Center and one at the Cody Center and they both said no PDD, but ADHD.
I know it's tough and you just want answers. My DD is 7 now and we still have no closure- at least I don't. She still doesn't eat many foods, still has a ton of sensory issues, still has social delays, anxiety and ADHD. Hang in there.

I would have welcomed this diagnosis almost 4-5 years ago. I think if the criteria were the same then as it is now, the DD might have gotten a diagnosis of PDD-NOS and may have gotten the services she REALLY needed. I feel like she fell through the cracks despite all of our efforts.
I am rambling. I guess what I mean to say is, you are the Mother, you know when something more needs to be done. Trust your intuition and your son will def benefit.
