Best Places for Day Trip on North Fork
I was looking for some input. I want to take my family to the North Fork on Saturday for a day trip. What's the best town to visit where we can walk around and go to some wineries?

Re: Best Places for Day Trip on North Fork
there isnt really a town i wound recommend you park your car in- you sort of drive along main street or sound avenue and youll pass vineyards on your left and right.
you park at the vineyards, do a tasting etc. then you go on your way again. some vineyars allow you to buy a bottle and sit outside, you may want to pack a picnic of cheese and fruit and crackers etc and spend an hour or so at one vineyard sitting on their terrace. many have terraces to sit outside. its very nice.
love lane is a street that cuts between main street and sound ave. love lane has a cute cheese shop and candy store and deli which is nice to stop into
you can also go to greenport which is a few miles past the last vineyard on sound avenue and park there, have lunch at claudios on the water and walk around the cute little shops.
on the way back you can get ice cream at a vintage ice crean shop and then possibly stop at the riverhead outlets

mrs porkchop has some lovely suggestions, i would do the same, but recommend that you hit the following wineries:
raphael is beautiful and fabulous reds
lieb, i am a club member and love their wines
old field, it's all the way out on 25 but very good
those are my favorites, enjoy and get a pie at briermeiers!!!

Re: Best Places for Day Trip on North Fork
Definitely hit Greenport. They have municipal parking lots and street parking.
Also, Shelter Island is nice.
Definitely stop at Briemere Farms for a pie and homemade jam - DELISH!!
The wineries are nice but not so fun with kids. Most do a tour which could be fun.
Cutchogue has a "town" to speak of. There's also a little par three golf course that's nice and family friendly.
Lunch at Braun's fish market is nice. They have great food and outdoor picnic tables you can eat at.
For dinner - I'd recommend the Seafood Barge in the Port of Egypt in Southold.

Re: Best Places for Day Trip on North Fork
Def Greenport. I don't know much about the wineries. Boring for me You can park in Greenport and spend the entire day there. Great Antique Shops, Candy Store, a great BBQ Restaurant, Starbucks, the Carousel, etc. If you like more the beach type thing, you can go to Orient State Park and then grab a bite to eat at Orient By the Bay
Briermers I haven't liked them for years. Overpriced and their pies are just bad lately. On the way out if you are interested in a bakery there is one on Main Rd called Jundas!! It is the best bakery ever. IMO
You can also stop at lavender by the Sea to get some honey and lavendar.
Have fun I am heading out there today for the weekend

Re: Best Places for Day Trip on North Fork
Your post made me laugh (in a cute way)- I live on the North Fork, so to hear it used for a day trip made me chuckle- It made me realize I live out in the boonies! Mattituck has some cute little shops on Love Lane (as PP already mentioned). I agree w/ Brieremere which is on the North Road at the 105 intersection- I don't go there often b/c I find most of their stuff overpriced, but it's worth it for a treat! MrsR's family has the lavendar farm, which I see a PP has also mentioned- I haven't been there yet but I've seen pics and it's beautiful! Greenport is probably the biggest 'town' as far as shops and stuff go after you pass Riverhead. There are lots of shops and places to eat there and a carousel if you have kids. You can take the ferry over to Shelter Island if that's something you have time for and are interested in- I don't go over there often, so I'm not really sure what's over there. Please FM me if you need anything else

Re: Best Places for Day Trip on North Fork
Greenport has some great places to eat after a day of wine tasting. Or you head back along 48 and stop at the Lobster Roll north side. Also on 48 is a tea cottage where you could stop for lunch. They have cute sandwiches. It is a pink place on the right hand side after Briemeirs. (not close after.. but after).
It is very cute.
Pugleisi hand paints beautiful wine bottles and most of the vineyards have music on the porches on the weekends.. Okay.. now I think I am draggin my hubby out east!!

REALLY?? Wow...I found this so surprising since I grew up in Western Suffolk and have since moved to the North Fork......the one thing I miss more then anything are the big-Italian-bakeries. I found Junda's very disappointing in comparison.
Any entrepeneurs out there -- the north fork needs more bakeries!!!!!!!
