Best School Districts -NC???
Girls from NC do you know some of the best school districts down there??
My hubby and I keep talking about possibly looking down there but I don't even know where to begin. So I guess the most important thing for me would be price obviously and school district because I have a 7 year old and I want the best education for him??
Any advice info would be great.
Thanks

Re: Best School Districts -NC???
The only thing I can tell you is, if you're looking in the Charlotte area, stay FAR AWAY from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools. Obviously that's a general statement, and I'm sure some of their schools are better than great...but as a district, they have a lot of problems...low teacher retention being one of them. I opted for a job in the Union County schools because they have a better overall reputation.

what she said . . . at least as far as Charlotte goes.
I've found a lot of GREAT elementary schools, its the middle and high schools that have me thinking i may have to move (dont even have kids yet, so not a problem for now).

Re: Best School Districts -NC???
I know nothing about NC but I have a friend who moved there (Charlotte area). She said that bc there is so much new development in her area, while her kids will be going to the blue ribbon school that they are zoned for, people who have moved in after them will have to have their children bussed to other schools. I dont know if it's a temp thing, widespread or very specific to her area, but I wanted to pass that along. Just make sure your children will be entitled to go to the school you expect them to be attending.
Hope this makes sense, it's second hand info so Im sorry I cant provide more insight but worth being aware of IMO.

Re: Best School Districts -NC???
its hard to compare teh schools, especailly to NY, because most websites grade them by state tests.
www.greatschools.net is great, it tells you scores, averages to the state, teacher details, student details, etc.
like the above posters said, with all the people moving down, schools are being burdened.

I am down here with an infant, I was worried about districts at first...but it is ever changing down here. There are charter schools and rezoning as well as bussing.
But there are Catholic schools down here, I am sort of leaning that way regardless.
I have heard and seen GREAT things from the Myers Park district.

Re: Best School Districts -NC???
Fortunately for us we live in a good school district...the only thing i'm not too thrilled with is the Trailers...b/c the schools are so over crowded a lot of classes are in trailers..it seems to be very common here...I also got fortunate to work in a great school as well. They are around...just like NY..you have great schools and some not so great schools....def check out www.greatschools.net, its very helpful

When we were researching we found this info:
In June, 2003, Newsweek Magazine ranked four CMS high schools to its Best in the U.S. List and all high schools in the district with a graduating class were ranked in the top 700. The achievement was based on the number of students participating in Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate courses.
Myers Park High School ranked 7th in the country.
Providence High ranked 48th, and Harding University High ranked 65th. East Mecklenburg High ranked 89th in the country.

This is completely accurate. The realtor we were working with said her kids ended up in 3 different public schools already from rezoning and bussing. They have not moved in the last few years.

I am confused this contradicts what MrsRivera said. How is it ranked high, if the teachers are leaving? Can someone explain??? TIA!!

there was a big discussion not to long ago about these school rankings - like in my HS, they offer CLEP and AP, everyone took CLEP over AP to get the CW post credit, and that wasnt included in the survey.
I would ignore those surveys, my FH is a teacher and agrees that these rankings are BS and do not show a true picture of how the school is doing.
you best bet it to see the schools, the kids, talk to the parents, etc.
and remember, schools in NC are county wide districts.
eta: Also, on greatschools.net, it makes me nervous that any va/ga/nc school I researched, the teacher section would rank them as "licensed, non licensed, and provisional license" while in NY the teachers are ranked "doctorate degree, masters degree, and bach degree", and most teachers on LI have a masters. my sister didnt take one education class, yet she can teach in VA.

Re: Best School Districts -NC???
I talked with a lot of people from the Myers Park schools. Its a mini campus down here, I use to walk the track everyday, so I met a lot of moms and alumni.
The colleges these kids go to are really great. You would think it was a private prep school. The parents are super involved.
