Best time of year to negotiate oil?
I think my oil company is taking me for a ride. I want to switch but being that it is already winter, do you think I'll be able to get a good deal? What is the best time of year to negotiate with these companies? Is it easy to get a free service contract?
Any companies I should call or stay away from? Any advice would be helpfu!

Re: Best time of year to negotiate oil?
I guess summer would be a better time than winter, but oil prices are through the roof right now...so, we'll see where it goes as the weather gets warmer.
I think some companies offer a 'free' service contract, but they may just be baking the cost of the contract into their price per gallon quote.
I'm locked in right now at $2.64/gallon (w/service contract) until October 2011. I locked in back in September.
My lock in price last winter was $2.29. Big difference!

Re: Best time of year to negotiate oil?
I don't think "negotiating" is an option any more. For the most part I usually call around in early fall to see what lock-in prices companies are offering. If you call too early, they say they haven't received pricing yet.
Oil has been so crazy lately that its really hard to get a "good" price. I locked in w/ Slomins back in late August for $2.69 w/ a free contract ($2.59 w/o contract) for one year. Last year we used Lewis oil w/ a cap of $2.29. This year Lewis was much higher and Slomins was the best deal we could find. Who knows what will happen next year.
There is a kiosk in the Walt Whitman Mall from Slomins and they have a much better rate than if you call Slomins direct. Last time I was there I think I saw it was $2.89. Other than that I don't know of any great deals right now.

Re: Best time of year to negotiate oil?
We have gas now but when we had oil, we had a contract but we did COD with another company. The contract was just insane and COD deliveries were MUCH cheaper with other companies. We would telll the other company we had a contract with that we did not need oil for a while, etc... then deliver with them every 3 deliveries. It was like almost $2/gallon difference at the time.

...we're with Swezey now. They haven't called me yet to schedule a 'check up' on my burner, so I guess I'll have to call them.
Our burner is really old...if it were newer, I'd probably do COD.
