Best time to travel - Thanksgiving
I am going to Maryland for Thanksgiving. Plans got a little messed up and now my options for heading down there are:
Wednesday - leave from Smithtown at 4:00 pm, or wait until like 8-9pm (but that means getting there well after midnight)
or, leave at like 5:30am on Thurs morning (Thanksgiving day). I'm thinking this is probably my best option.
Thoughts?

Re: Best time to travel - Thanksgiving
Don't leave at 4 pm the day before- between normal rush hour and holiday travel that will be a NIGHTMARE of traffic getting through and out of the nyc area.
Go with either later that night or early the next AM

I agree it all depends on what you like to do.
Though Thursday morning I would assume it some areas you might hit traffic from others going to where they have to on thanksgiving but it would be much less than Wednesday

Thursday.
Leaving Wednesday is bound to be THE WORST time to leave. Rush hour + holiday traffic = NIGHTMARE.
ETA: And if you can avoid I95, do it. Take an alternate route.

Re: Best time to travel - Thanksgiving
We are doing the opposite. Driving trom Maryland to Long Island. We usually leave Thursday morning at 7 and breeze right through. One year we left Wednesday at 4 and it was an absolute nightmare in traffic!!

My sister drives from VA to LI every Thanksgiving and it works out way better to leave super early Thanksgiving day.
