BEST vacuum cleaner (upright) for wood floors and low pile carpet

so, we have wood floors on the first floor and carpet in the upstairs bedrooms. the carpet is dense and low...not shaggy or anything like that (I know NOTHING of the language of carpets) it doesnt have stringy things stand up though.

i want the most effective both cleaning and cost wise....I started looking at Dirt DEvil uprights but not sure they will do the trick. I've NEVER had a carpet in my home before.

I will not, under any circumstances, purchase a Dyson Chat Icon

can you guys recommend something? TIA

I don't think an upright is the right vacuum for wood floors. I think you're better off getting a canister vacuum which comes with special floor attachments...Miele is the best! http://www.consumersearch.com/www/house_and_home/canister-vacuums/

My mother is a clean freak and she raves about this vacuum...hence my recommendation. Its a little $$ but not as $$ as a Dyson. Its a German brand I believe so its guranteed to be good.

I'd go with a Hoover or Oreck Commercial upright.

In my experience (having a buttload of pets), the commercial uprights are the best.

Dyson sucked. In a bad way.

I have a Hoover upright from about 10 years ago, and it has settings for hardwood floors & doesn't seem to scratch, but I'm not sure how common a feature that is.

sorry, I was going to recommend the Dyson - I have 2 dogs and a cat - it's the best vac out there.

honestly, the more the I think about it. the less likely I will be to use the vc on my (beloved and beautiful 200 year old original wide plank) wood floors...I may lick them clean instead Chat Icon Chat Icon

this is a part time home, and we have no pests.

I DO want clean carpets though.

Exactly right. A canister is best for wood floors. I just got Consumer Reports in the mail today and they recommend the Electrolux Oxygen canister and the Kenmore Progressive upright. Chat Icon I have a Kenmore Progressive canister that I love!!

Re: BEST vacuum cleaner (upright) for wood floors and low pile carpet

Consumer Reports rated the Hoover Tempo Widepath U5140-900 ($70) at a 66. The highest vacuum they rated at a 75. The highest Dyson was rated at a 65.

I'm planning on getting two of the Hoovers myself.(one upstairs, and one downstairs) For $140, I'll have two vacuums which are each better than a single $550 Dyson.

The Eureka Boss Smart Vac 4870 was rated 68, and a "Best Buy" by ConsumerReports.

I also have a Kenmore Progressive Canister, works great on the wood floors and the carpet attachment works wonders on the area rugs.
