Betsy DeVos picked for Trump's education secretary
http://www.cnn.com/2016/11/23/politics/betsy-devos-picked-for-education-secretary/index.html
... DeVos chairs the American Federation for Children, a group that promotes charter school education, and also served on the board of the Foundation for Excellence in Education, a group led by former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush -- one of Trump's GOP primary opponents -- which promoted both school choice and the Common Core education standards. Trump vowed during his campaign to eliminate the Common Core education standards, and his pick of DeVos may scare conservative opponents of the standards who hope Trump will make good on his campaign promise in office. ...
I honestly don't know enough about her yet to voice an opinion, so this post is just purely a statement of fact about who he picked.

Betsy DeVos picked for Trump's education secretary
I don't know much about this but I agree with the previously posted idea that past presidents have not improved education so we shall see.
But I posted a factually his choice for UN and got no response so I guess she wasn't controversial enough? haha

Not happy. She is extremely pro school choice and anti teacher union. I believe she is pro common core which is interesting. I really worry that this could be terrible for our nation's children. She has also worked to squash regulations on charter schools.

Not seeing anything positive so far. She is another corporate person? Her husband runs Amway? She has no experience teaching in public schools?

She's a big Republican donor, so basically "pay-to-play"

Re: Betsy DeVos picked for Trump's education secretary
Frank Cannon, the president of the adamantly anti-Common Core American Principles Project, said in a statement Tuesday that DeVos would be "a very Jeb-like pick" and called it "puzzling" that Trump was considering DeVos for the post. "He repeatedly assured parents across the heartland that he intended to return power over education to local schools," Cannon said of Trump. "It is puzzling, then, to see reports that the Trump transition team is considering an establishment, pro-Common Core Secretary of Education -- this would not qualify as 'draining the swamp' -- and it seems to fly in the face of what Trump has stated on education policy up to this point." After the pick was announced, the pro-Trump news site Breitbart blared the headline: "TRUMP ANNOUNCES PRO-COMMON CORE EDUCATION SECRETARY" -- noting the second apparent betrayal in as many days. ...
Wow, Trump is just pissing everyone off lately....

The heartland, small town people who voted for Trump were among the first I thought about. I can't see how school choice is going to help these very small towns improve their already underfunded education.

Her father in law is founder of Amway and owner of the Orlando Magic. Brother is Erik Prince, ex-navy seal, ex-CIA spy, founder of Blackwater, a security firm banned from Iraq for fatal shootings. Ick.

I am relieved he didn't go with Michelle Rhee, but this does not sound too promising either.

Pro common core and anti teachers unions. Thought he was going to get rid of common core. Trump supporters can now scratch that off their list.

Re: Betsy DeVos picked for Trump's education secretary
I sort of said this on a previous thread, but appreciable changes in education happen at state level. That is where all the money and regs come from. Even federal legislation like NCLB was interpreted and implemented by states, with NY (as always) taking things to the extreme, and Race to the Top was optional, motivated by a paltry sum of funds that paid for barely one staff position in my district.
We're all better off looking closely at state senate elections, Cuomo, and going to local school board meetings if we want to improve education.
Vouchers, to answer the PP question, are basically a system in which the local district gives a family the money that student would have cost the district so that they can shop for a different school. It's part of the school choice movement, along with charter schools, which, incidentally, are no more successful on average than public schools, according to the data.

In addition, they don't have to adhere to all of the State "standards" as public schools, although it is made to seem as if they exceed them. I am nauseous over this choice.

This. Charter schools also can. E selective in who they accept, historically turning down low achievers and students with disabilities. That's why their numbers look better.

I am in support of school choice. Although we have some charters in NYC, we don't have school choice. I would love to use my tax dollars and send my kids to Catholic school.

Re: Betsy DeVos picked for Trump's education secretary
I will take all the heat about this but I am 10000% anti union so this is great to me. And as a parent I don't mind the common core. If they could only do away with tenure too that would be a home run! Unions and tenure are a thing of the past. Only in the teaching profession can you absolutely suck at your job and have no repercussions. My daughter is suffering right now from a teacher who won't change but can't get fired. It's infuriating.

Yes, this is terrible for our special education students. There are so many kids who will be left behind in this kind of system.

Betsy DeVos picked for Trump's education secretary
I am reserving my opinion until I see exactly what her plan is going to be. What mandates she wants in place and how the federal aid will be disseminated. I do not have any issue with charter schools or school of choice in theory but without certain mandates it will be disastrous for special education students. I also have no issue with revamping the unions because I do not believe in tenure. I would much rather they leave decisions to the state or local governments - and then work to revamp NY education laws.

I just want to say something about tenure (this goes out to Lululu as well) since its reputation has veered so far away from the intentions behind its inception, which were to give teachers the latitude and intellectual freedom to do what was best for students despite the political climate. It was in a time when people trusted teachers as the adults outside the home who knew their children best, better than any bureaucrat making rules or hiring and firing.
I know full well it has been abused by under-performers. (These people exist in every field, and it's not right to paint the lot with this one brush. The police brutality issue is suffering from this same disease.) Hard-working teachers like me and probably a lot of other women on this board hate that just as much as you do. It's a slap in the face when you're burning the midnight oil and taking time away from your family to give more of yourself to students while someone counts paper clips in an office on the same salary. We get it.
HOWEVER, I cannot tell you how many times I have disregarded administrative directives about curriculum in the midst of this testing and standardization craze that has dominated the decade+ that I have been in this field. I did it because I knew what was good for the kids in front of me, and that didn't include cutting literature or projects or sound writing instruction to subject them to several weeks worth of canned testing drills to ease the anxiety of administrators wanting to fluff the data for their own CYA and advancement. I could not have done that without the protection of tenure.
Most of us love your kids and are passionate about achieving real gains with them, and I have personally used my tenure as a force of good rather than a crutch to become complacent. Just so people on the outside understand what's really happening on the inside, but I'm getting off my now.
