I didn't BF for very long but I was encouraged to use this position specifically because my baby was small. So, I would guess that as they grow, this might not be an optimal position anymore.

my babies are 7 mos old and we still use this position a lot. they just put their legs up on the back of the couch or they bend them down-they figure out how to make it comfortable. believe me, if they want the milk they are going to make it work!!

are you propping your dc on pillows beside you? that really helps.

I agree with Kerie, I was encouraged to use this hold because DD was small and a poor latcher/sucker and she couldn't stay awake. I liked it for a while until it just stopped working for us. Now we use the cross-cradle.

This was the only position i could do. The others just didnt work. Yeah as she gets bigger it got more difficult, i found i couldnt lean my back against anything, so her legs could go past me. I also would get a second pillow to put her legs on, b/c they ran off the boppy.

I used this hold for the first 5 months that I BFed (I went to 6 mos and in that last month she was big enough to sort of just sit on my lap). I always used the Boppy and as she got longer, her legs would just stick out the side (it really wasn't a "football" hold anymore, more just that she was laying on the Boppy face up with my arm cradling just her upper body and head - if that makes sense Chat Icon).

However, the FEW times I BFed in public (e.g the mall), I used the cradle hold as it didn't work well without my Boppy and comfy rocking chair. Chat Icon

Im using the boppy and sometimes I put a pillow under the boppy too. I just feel like I am crushing her legs sometimes....

Same here. I was only able to do this for a few weeks at best. Especially once he was too big for the support pillow it became very hard.

I was encouraged to use this position in the beginning to work on my DS's latch. I used it probably up until he was about 3 months old. I think I remember tucking his legs up as he got longer.

I also used (and still use at times) the cross craddle hold. That allowed me to support my very large boobie and keep the latch correct. I didn't start using the regular craddle hold until he was about 6 months old.

We also BF lying down A LOT. I didn't get the hang of it until he was 4 months old. I like this best because I can rest while he's BFing.

As long as his latch and everything else is fine, use the position that is most comfortable to you Chat Icon

I could never get this hold down, it seemed awkward every time we tried it.

My DD was on the longer side & after that first week or so, it just wasn't possible to do for us...I found laying down on the bed w/ her next to me was easiest or the cross cradle.
