BFing and Diet

Hi,

I've been BF'ing now for a little over 2 weeks and had a question. Are there any foods that are off limits for me or that I need to be careful of while BF'ing? I talked to different nurses/lactation consultants and got conflicting answers. While pregnant I was really careful of unpasteurized cheeses, mercury levels in fish, etc. But now that I'm BF'ing- what do I need to be careful of? Thanks!

I watch alcohol, caffeine, and mercury fish. Don't think you need to be careful of anything else unless your child is unusually sensitive.

i didn't limit anything at all except alcohol. regarding alcohol, i used the "if you're sober enough to drive, you're sober enough to breastfeed" rule.

Re: BFing and Diet

I HAD to limit a lot since DD had/has a milk protein allergy. No milk, cheese, basically dairy....also I watch my alcohol and I can pretty much judge now at 10.5 months what's going to affect her. Now, if I'm gassy Chat Icon DD is going to be!

I eat anything and we never had any issues. I would avoid alcohol but I don't drink anyway....

I haven't had any alcohol or coffee or soda - I watch my caffeine intake through other foods and drinks and I watch my fish intake - I'm crazy though Chat Icon

I just limit alcohol, or at least the timing of my pumping. I also watch kielbalsi b/c that gets her majorly fussy...Chat Icon

Re: BFing and Diet

My DD was gassy so I had to be careful of eating certain foods like broccoli & peppers. If DC has a particularly gassy reaction one day, just think about what you ate and make adjustments.
