BFing and pumping ... please help

I have been BFing since DD was born (2 weeks ago tomorrow!). We have a wedding to go to in 2 weeks when DD will be 1 month old. My plan is to pump before then so I can leave her with my parents.

Problem is, I so don't get the logistics of pumping. I plan on getting the Pump In Style (I will eventually be returning to work so I figure I may as well get a good one now). How should I go about pumping? When? Should I set up a regular routine of giving her a bottle a day? What do I do when I'm at the wedding? (will my boobs be ridiculously full?). I just don't get anything pumping related! (it was hard enough to figure out BFing!!).

Thanks for any help you can offer! Chat Icon

Re: BFing and pumping ... please help

I was (and still am sometimes so check what others think also!) completely clueless with pumping...when I started pumping at 6 weeks, I pumped once or twice a day and froze the milk and gave the baby a bottle once a day...I wouldn't pump too often in the beginning or you will start producing way more milk than you may want to produce...if you pump or bf before you leave for the wedding and do the same as soon as you get home, you will probably be fine...

Re: BFing and pumping ... please help

I am almost eclusively pumping, because of work and having an extremely fast let-down tha frustrates my little guy. It's easier to give a bottle, so I am CONSTANTLY pumping. When I am going out for a long event, I bring my pump and pump in the car using the batteries or the manual pump. I use the Lansinoh pump wipes to clean it really well, and then if I need it during the event, I will pump quickly, in the bathroom or my car, just to relieve the pressure and so that I dont look like I am going to pop out of my bra Chat Icon However, I am at the point now where I dont really leak and can hold A LOT! I sometimes just pack a bigger bra Chat Icon

Re: BFing and pumping ... please help

There is a terrific internet resource for BFing moms called kellymom.com. They have chat boards divided by age of the baby and then specialty discussions regarding subjects such as pumping with info just regarding pumping. good luck!

Re: BFing and pumping ... please help

The ladies above have great advice. Yes only pump once or twice at first, you can store the BM for like 3 months I think in the freezer.

If possible I would give one bottle of BM (to get your baby used to the bottle) at the same time each day, preferrably right in the middle of the time of the wedding (then your boobs will be used to not feeding him at that time, which can help decrease the pressure while you're at the wedding). Also as someone else said, you may want to bring the pump to relieve the pressure at the wedding. Good luck!!
