BF'ing mommies
So I have a question..... How many of you 'prepared' your nips with Lanolin?
I have heard that it helps.....

Re: BF'ing mommies
While pregnant? I didn't. It has taken a prescription cream, used on and off every few days, to enable me to keep breastfeeding. I have had a terrible time with soreness, shallow cracks and pain.
I will say that the heavier ones like PureLan and Lansinoh have given me a clogged pore/duct so now I will only use the thin prescription cream.

Re: BF'ing mommies
If anything, that would be the worst thing as the Lansinoh will soften your nipples- you want them toughend up if anything.
That said, I did nothing to prepare (other than calling a lactation consultant). Your best bet to avoid sore nips to have a LC help you establish a proper latch. I NEVER had any of the issues many women talk about (NO BLEEDING, NO CRACKED NIPS) and I attribute that soley to my LC. I was slightly sore, but that went away after 2 weeks.

same here, i did nothing to prepare my nipples and i had none of the pain, cracked nipples, etc. my soreness also lasted only a couple weeks and the lansinoh helped a lot with that. i strongly recommend it!!

Re: BF'ing mommies
I didn't - but the first month was a nightmare for me - it hurt so bad i thought i would die. i ended up with cracking and bleeding and mastitis But, now at 4.5 months that's completely gone - doesn't hurt at all and none of the other problems! I did use that lotion after DS was born when i had the pain and it didn't really help me at all.

Re: BF'ing mommies
I did not prep them, but I also didn't have the soreness and cracked nipples. DD didn't latch for a while and so I pumped and then when she finally latched we were under the supervision of a LC and so we never suffered the ugly parts.

Re: BF'ing mommies
Now I'm wondering what to do....
I read that putting the lanolin helps prepare your nips so that they don't dry out at all. I have a tube of Lansinoh, and I'm using a trial size tube of PureLan right now.
Grrrrrrrr.... why do there have to be so many conflicting thoughts on what to do?!?!?!?!?!?!

Re: BF'ing mommies
I've breastfed three all over 2 years each. With my first two I didn't prepare and with my third I did about 2 weeks before. I only notice a slight difference with the cracked nipples.

Re: BF'ing mommies
I only used at beginning of bfing i used lanisol (however spelt).. I had cracked bleeding nipples b/c the nurses at the hospital said they were to busy to help me learn to latch my dd on correctly. Once i learned on my own, and no more cracking and bleeding i stopped using. Now at 4m i dont use anything and no problems.

Re: BF'ing mommies
I don't think it will hurt, but it's not necessary, neither is scrubbing your nipples to toughen them. As everyone said, it's about a good latch that's how you avoid cracked nipples. If you get cracked nipples it will help, but I'm really not sure that it prevent them.
Make sure you are you using Lansinoh brand when you are actually breastfeeding, other brands need to be wiped off before breastfeeding (it has to do with the purity of the product).

Re: BF'ing mommies
I had sore nipples about the first 2 weeks. I used the cream and that helped. I didn't do anything while I was preggers except read up a lot on BF'ing. It's all about the proper latch. I read this book, Breastfeeding Made Simple and went on the website, breastfeedingmadesimple.com.

Re: BF'ing mommies
As other have said above, if the latch is correct, you should not get sore, cracked nipples at all. That is actually an indication of something wrong!

Re: BF'ing mommies
I didn't prepare and am not with this one. However used the cream throughout for first few months (as needed, especially in the beginning). The cream definitely helps soothe your nipples from nursing.

Re: BF'ing mommies
I never did
But I never had any pain whatsoever associated w/bfing (just a tiny bit sore in the beginning and that was it)...so I guess I got lucky.

Re: BF'ing mommies
I didn't use lanolin because I'm allergic to wool so I was advised not to use it but I did use this other stuff from Palmers. I've been bfing for a week with no cracking/bleeding etc. I hope it continues this way.
One of my girlfriends advised me to stop washing your nipples when you shower so they get a kind of waxy texture to them. She's got 3 kids and never had any trouble bfing so I trust her advice completely.

Re: BF'ing mommies
i used the cream, and it helped a little. i would cry b/c the pain was so bad, i was cracked, bleeding, the whole nine, i gave up after 2 weeks of unbearable pain. i took a BF class and the nurse in the hospital helped me, she said he just had a good grip.

Re: BF'ing mommies
With my first I didn't use anything until they got dry and cracked and I felt like it was to late. The second time around I applied it about 2 weeks before my due date but only did it when I remember and then I tried to do it everyday after I had for the first 2 weeks. I didn't crack this time but I stopped using it because DD was breaking out on her jawline from it.

Re: BF'ing mommies
I didn't. On my Mom's suggestion I "toughened up" my nipples with a washcloth in the shower for about a month before but frankly I don't think it did much.
I use the lanolin now whenever I get a little dry or irritated.
