Bfing moms- can I have a cocktail or two on Christmas
? HOw do I know when to pump and dump? I know the occasional \beer or glass of wine is ok but Im not sure about martini's- its been forever and I would really like a cocktail on christmas. I have frozen BM that I can give him if I€ have to pump and dump but Im not sure how it all works.

Re: Bfing moms- can I have a cocktail or two on Christmas
It's been many a moon since I've BF, but I believe that the pump & dump thing is a myth. I think as long as you have the drink an hour or two before you plan to nurse, you should be fine. If you have more than one or two, I'd probably have a bottle ready to go...

now knowing anything i pumped and dumped with DD#1, never did with DD#2. i believe it's all about timing and the need to pump may just be required for comfort depending on when you need to feed.
best time to drink is while nursing

I bought those alcohol tester strips, just in case.
I can't afford to pump and dump
but I'll probably only have one glass of wine or champagne.

My Dr. said basically the same thing as the KellyMom link, if I'm feeling the effects of the alcohol then don't pump (or BF). But, if you have one drink an hour it is not going to affect your BM. And there is certainly no need to pump and dump. DS is 5 months old and I've had a few drinks here and there along the way.

If you are sober enough to drive, you are sober enough to breastfeed. I've had a coctail or two (or more ) breastfeeding both kids & I've never had issues.

ITA....I go by how I feel. I have no issues at all about having a glass of wine and feeding DD. Ideally the best time to have the drink it right after you feed, that way, when it's time to nurse again, the drink is out of your system. I bought those dumb test strips (HUGE waste of money). If you feel the you need to test your BM for alcohol, then yes, of course there is too much alcohol in it! You will most certainly know if you are not able to feed the baby. And if you are EBF, then I highly doubt you will ever get to this point unless you are out for the night away from DC with no intention of feeding them yourself anyway.
