BFing... overproducing milk?

I think that I am making too much milk.
Justin usually:
- gulps, chokes, sputters, coughs during BFing
- bites/clamps down down on my nip
- is feeding less, and sometimes doesn't go the normal min of 15 each breast
- spits up when burping
And my tatas feel full a lot, or soon after I just fed.

Has anyone had an oversupply? And if so, what did you do to slow it down?

You may want to hand express some milk before your nurse him so the letdown doesn't happen so quickly.

Honestly, I would never try to decrease an oversupply. I would just pump it out & freeze it.Chat Icon Chat Icon

I agree. This happened to me the when DD was two weeks old. I was engorged! Chat Icon I pumped and froze the milk, which came in handy when my supply regulated itself. Don't worry, your supply will "normalize" on it's own in a week or so. For now, pump, pump, pump. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Totally agree!! Express an ounce or so before you feed him so it is easier to latch and the letdown isnt as much.

Re: BFing... overproducing milk?

I had an oversupply as well. A couple points that helped me. If you have to pump, pump right before you feed and only pump off enough to take off the over full feeling. You may also have to feed off the same side for two feedings in a row because the hindmilk is the most important and with an oversupply, the baby typically will get mostly the foremilk. While you may have to feed off the same side each time, also try to pump minimally on the other.

I know everyone gets excited to hear an oversupply and thinks it's something to take advantage of (while it is a semi-good thing to build up your freezer) it is extremely painful and difficult when you go through 800 breast pads and clothes because it's everywhere! You do want your supply to regulate according to your baby and not so much to keeping up with the oversupply. I mean, I use to keep one pumping session (full, not just the ones to take off the pain) and still maintain a wonderful stock supply. It will regulate, but it takes a little longer than "normal."

Feel free to PM me with any questions.

You guys are right... It makes sense to pump some milk out before I offer it to DS to slow it down for him until the flow 'normalizes'. Thanks ladies for the info! Chat Icon

Re: BFing... overproducing milk?

I had an oversupply and I regulated (the engorgement - not supply) by pumping and giving DS a few bottles in the day of expressed BM (I nursed bedtime, overnight - when necessary and morning) - that way i could really empty myself.

I enjoyed the time when someone else could feed him and still was able to enjoy what time we did have.

I ended up having almost 50 oz of milk a day (if I pumped the entire day) and a 3 month freezer supply.

I heard that you could also lean back while nursing to help slow it down a bit.

I've been trying that, as well as holding DS above the breast, that way he can direct the flow himself.
