Does it beep? Any humming or clicking noises?
After 6 years, I'd say it's ready to go.

Re: BIG computer problem....need help
I have a 6 year old gateway and recently had the same problem. I was using the computer and it just kind of shut itself down with the orange light remaining on the tower.
DH opened the tower, and bascially just dusted it out by blowing into it. You can also buy compressed air to do a better job. It turned out that it was so dusty that the fan for the power supply was clogged with dust and not running, causing my computer to turn off to prevent from overheating.

Re: BIG computer problem....need help
hold down the power button for 20 seconds and it should turn off, then turn it back on.

Re: BIG computer problem....need help
I have a Dell not a Gateway but something similar happened to us. With the Dell though it beeped when you tried to turn it on but wouldn't show anything on the monitor. The number of beeps helped us to diagnose the problem. The dell also has diagnostic lights on the back of it which also helped. We were able to look it up online and found out that there was an issue with our memory modules. Try going on the Gateway website and look for diagnostic codes.
