Just the beginning of the story who might have it blocked at work for others.....
NEW YORK (CNN) -- Republican presidential candidate John McCain announced Wednesday that he is suspending his campaign to return to Washington and focus on the "historic" crisis facing the U.S. economy.

The Arizona senator called on his Democratic rival, Barack Obama, to do the same.
They are awaiting Barack Obama's resonse on this.....what do we think?

I think since they will be voting on Friday it would look bad if he wasnt there. BUT (JMO) I think he is also trying to prolong this debate.

Im actually glad he is doing this. Elected officials shouldn't be allowed to be in office while campaigning. Doesn't serve their constituents properly.

I was really looking forward to the debates. We were even having a "debate party".
But i do understand the reason behind canceling it.

I think a lot of people will probably think it's a political move -- but I also think it's where all senators need to be right now. This is their job.

Yeah I do agree with that---but I also think it IS a little bit of a political move at the same time. But regardless--they both are Senators and should be there for this vote.

Re: Big News: McCain Suspending His Campaign to handle financial crisis in America
how is he "suspending" his campaign.
this is laughable. he's going to washington to sit in his chair for a few days and VOTE.
but I am pretty sure every other person in his campaign will still be stomping. the commercials will still be airing...people will still be blogging...
I think this is a grandiose gesture to say "see how much I care...you come first" but it's easy to say that when eleventy billion people are there to pick up where you left off.
I dont' think Obama has a choice now...even if he wanted to abstain...and I think they should be there to HEAR what is being said on the senate floor.

I think you just proved my point.
I wasn't meaning to imply it definitely wasn't (or was) a political move... just that people will think it is and regardless, I think all senators need to be present in DC this week.
ETA -- and my own first reaction was "sounds like a political move"

He wants to fix something he has himself admitted he doesn't have a clue about?
Ruh roh.
All he's doing right now is pulling the fire alarm so he thinks he doesn't have to take the midterm.

yep, that's exactly what I think.
not to mention, it takes a tad of the sting off of the duely earned criticisms he has received on the campaign trail concerning this exact same topic. (the great deregulator reborn last week as the great regulator )

I think he is doing the right thing, but I understand that people want to read into it. If Obama suggested it first, would the response be the same?

It looks like the Obama camp is saying "It's still on."
Shouldn't a president be able to multitask? This move by McCain is a hail mary.

Re: Big News: McCain Suspending His Campaign to handle financial crisis in America
Obama just said himself he's continuing with the debates. He said a person who's going to be president should be able to multitask, and it would be letting the American public know exactly where they stand.

Re: Big News: McCain Suspending His Campaign to handle financial crisis in America
watching Obama on CNN- he says that the American people need to hear from the candidates Friday, as in 40 days one will be running the country. I completely agree. President needs to multi-task & deal w/ different issues... they need to debate.

for me, yep........ except for the part where I suspect he's trying to deflect negative attention on his prior deregulation history...
but sure, it's definitely a stunt.
if it WEREN'T, he would have contacted obama privately and come to a gentlemen's agreement.

oh puhleeezzeeee! McCain has been part of the problem from the get-go and NOW he decides that he needs to be part of the solution. who is he trying to kid? this is just a stalling tactic. he knows he wont look good in any of these debates and this, he figures, is a sure-fire way of getting out of it.
he's all about helping the American people. yeah, right.

his excuse that presidents need to be able to multi-task... yes, that is true, but he IS NOT THE PRESIDENT... and may never be. also, there is no other crisis right now that he has multi-task with this one. he is a US SENATOR and frankly both him and McCain have not done their JOBS in over 18 months. get your azz to washington and your job!!!
i think McCain is doing the right thing. they need to stop the political BS and get in there. what's the big deal in moving the debate? this is more important.

Re: Big News: McCain Suspending His Campaign to handle financial crisis in America
this is a stalling tactic and a political stunt. If he can't multitask now, what is he going to do on January 20th?!?!
The campaign has to go on. And if JSM and BHO can't get the download from their caucuses, then they are inept.

I agree with you, but I think this is very much a political move on his part. Stalling so Sarah has another week to cram is my guess.
If I thought it was an honest effort on his part I would applaud this, but somehow, I doubt it is.

You know, thinking about this some more, what are they really going to achieve by stalling the debate? There are plenty of other senators at work on this, and he really doesn't have to be physically there to offer his opinions on the bailout package.
He is running for president, and as such, I think voters have the right to hear his stance on the issues that affect us.
The whole thing just makes me ******. I really do think he's stalling to give Sarah (and maybe himself though probably her) more time.
