[BIG SIGH] HOW do you go about finding a nanny?
Well the inevitable happened. I need to go back to work next month and even though I thought my Mom was going to be my child care provider, the reality has sunk in that it's just too much for her at her age to take care of DC for 15 hours/day, 5 days/week.
Now I am freaking out and need to find child care and have NO idea where to start! Do day care agencies take babies from 6am - 8pm? Or, for an at-home nanny, do I call random agencies I find online? I would prefer getting a referral because I want someone trustworthy. Can anyone offer any advice about where they found their nannies? HEEEELLLPPP!!!

I'm in NJ too....Was it Maplewoodonline.com? A lot of my colleagues found their nannies there, though I didn't have any luck.
Apparently, Craigslist is a popular source too.

Re: [BIG SIGH] HOW do you go about finding a nanny?
I used by sister's babysitter.
I don't know any daycares that start earlier than 8.
I asked people who had nannies. I also went up to nannies I observed who were great and asked them if they had any friends.
Good luck.

There are agenies that you can go through and I would really suggest a nanny. I think 15 hours in daycare out of the house is too much for a child. I don't know where you are located but Suffolk County Council for Childcare can help ...

wow, that works out to $24,000/year after taxes - which is about a $50,000 salary! now I see why it's almost not worth keeping a job unless you make significantly more than that!

I think the going rate is about $11 - $14 an hour. We pay $12 and usually we use our nanny 45 hours a week...so we pay on average $540/week. It's a lot of $$$ but I love the convenience and flexibility and the one on one attention that my son receives.

I won't lie to you. It was a very difficult process. I would first conduct phone interviews and then if I liked them, I would invite them for a real interview. Some wouldn't show and some were just awful. I found it to be a very frustrating experience but after much diligence, I finally found someone who is wonderful. She is like part of the family!
Good luck!!
Yes, it was. Same experience with the interviewing process!

Re: [BIG SIGH] HOW do you go about finding a nanny?
I first placed an add in the Long Island Catholic newspaper and got about 20-25 calls. Later on we ended up hiring my brother inlaws friends mom. I would try that, it seemed to be a great way to get interviews. FYI we pay $400 a week.

Re: [BIG SIGH] HOW do you go about finding a nanny?
That is the absolute mininum here in Westchester. If you go through an agency, they charge A LOT as well. We found our awesome nanny through my sister's nanny. I think that is the best way to get someone you can trust without going bankrupt. If you see a nanny who impresses you, go right up to her and ask her if she knows anyone she would recommend who is looking for a nanny job. That's how a lot of my friends found their (terrific) nannies. Good luck!

$500 a week times 52 week is $26K a year
that's about what I brought home after taxes on a $35K a year salary
