Bikram: so excited!
I've posted before that I've been bummed that I can only make it to class usually maximum 3x a week because of DH's schedule (he's my childcare).
My studio just added 5:30PM classes on Sat&Sun.
Now I know I will be able to go more frequently (often he works on weekends too but is usually home by then).
It's so fun and relaxing BTW if anyone is looking for something new to add in the new year.

Re: Bikram: so excited!
No. But do you also work where you practice? That may have something to do with it.
I know at least one poster who was banned for this in the past.
ETA: I believe it is a LIF rule that you can only "advertise" your business or place of business if you are a paying vendor.

Re: Bikram: so excited!
This is hot yoga you are talking about, right? I am very interested in taking Bikram and have been doing some research. I am looking to loose weight while getting tone. I am hoping that Yoga will be something I fall in love with since I loathe the gym. I was also tossing the idea of kickboxing around, but I feel my body is so tight yoga may help loosen me up a bit.
Can you give me some insight?

Re: Bikram: so excited!
It definitely is. I believe the majority of the teachers where I go are trained by Bikram himself, and many of them teach at the various HY/Bikram studios across LI.
It is always the same 26 postures (I go to Hot Yoga Massapequa), which makes it easy to learn and advance.
There are other "hot yoga" studios (PP teaches at one) where it's hot yoga but never the same class twice.
Honestly, I think it's just a personal preference and a studio where you will feel the most comfortable.
Most important thing to have a good class is remaining hydrated. It is good to start the day before you plan to go.
Also it can take YEARS to master certain postures and you should never compare yourself to what others in the class are doing. There's one chick in my class who constantly ignores the teachers and pushes herself to do poses she is not ready for and it is very distracting and annoying.
You may have a rough class and need to sit out for a large portion of the time, even if you've been going a long time. I know I do!!
I absolutely hate the gym and never stick with any kind of "routine exercise or diet" and this, I have been going for a couple of years now, usually 3x a week minimum.
Never judge your first class, by your first class.
Most studios offer an inexpensive special for 10 consecutive days of unlimited classes, because that is generally the amount of classes you will need to make up your mind if this is for you or not. ($20.00 @ HYM).
Some people will shy away because of the price, but if you go a lot, the unlimited packages are VERY inexpensive if you do the math.
I also know some people who "work study" so they can go to class for free ;).
Try to wear either shorts and a fitted work-out tank, sports bra or fitted yoga capris. Do not wear any loose clothing or sweats--you will become saturated and uncomfortable, and will then need to constantly re-adjust which will be distracting for you and everyone else.
Bring a mat, towel and water for your first class. You don't really need a wash cloth or face towel but a lot of people bring them to "wipe the sweat" but this is not really encouraged.
Try to get to class at least 15-20 minutes early so you can get a good spot.
I think these are all the big things!!!
Laugh, remember to BREATHE and just have fun.......it's only YOGA!!!
P.S. Try not to talk when you go into the actual studio. I see a lot of newbies (especially when they go in packs with their friends) who do this and it's poor etiquette and rude.

This is EXACTLY what I'm doing. I practice bikram - an addiction - hence the username! and I am starting kickboxing this week. I got an awesome web deal off ilovekickboxing - $20 for three classes plus boxing gloves.
bikram is awesome because even though its the same 26 postures, it's a challenge every time. i've been doing it for 1 1/2 years and still don't think i'm very good at it, but as one teacher says 'it's yoga practice, not yoga perfect.' drink lots of water, come on an empty stomach, have an open mind, and def don't wear sweats! most importantly, have fun!
ETA: If you find that you really like it and want to save some money, most studios hire work studies, which is what I do. at my studio, I work 5 1/2 hours/week and get free unlimited yoga plus discounts on everything else. It really comes out to be more like 4 hours of work though, because the 5 1/2 includes doing one class the day you work. It doesn't even really feel like work - at my studio, I check people in, sell packages, get the studio ready for the next class, guide beginners by showing them around and telling them what to expect, answer the phone, make beginner packets, etc etc. it's easy and the time goes by fast.

Re: Bikram: so excited!
Oh, duh, totally forgot to add to not eat before class!
You WILL feel like you have to throw up or like you have to crap yourself if you do.
During the week, if I am really starving I will eat a couple of clementines, stuff like that an hour or two before I go to keep my blood sugar in check.
I often carry fruit in my bag for after class too.
Certain teachers will get annoyed if you leave the class too, so if you are feeling sick or dizzy, just sit down on your mat on your knees for standing series, or lie down on your back during floor.
